John L Sullivan’s win over Patsy Cardiff.

Broke his left arm in the first round, but managed to conceal the fact for the rest of the fight, and keep Cardiff cautious with his right hand.

Cardiff later said that if he had known about the injury, he would have been champion now.

    Good call.

Schmeling nearly quit because he was afraid of killing Walker.

Before internet and video... we could buy those "Ring Classic" 8mm films. Remember? That's when I first saw this fight. And of course I have also read about it (The Ring, Boxing illustrated) many years ago.

I recall one particular story, where a bunch of ex-champs are being introduced from the ring before a big fight... and when Mickey Walker entered the ring, Max (who was already up there) walked straight over and shook the hand of the man, who had fought so galantly against him. The fans, who at first had given Schmeling a hostile reception, appreciated this gesture and now gave the German a big round of applause.

Spinks' 'long term' Girlfriend died in a car crash two months previously. And Spinks 2 year old Daughter came into the dressing room prefight to ask when her Mother would be showing up to watch the fight? Spinks, unsurprisingly, struggled to keep his composure.

    Oh yeah a good example.

There is a thin divide between courageous and stupid. And Perhaps Michael Watson crossed that line, and sadly paid a heavy price stepping out for the 12th round in his rematch with Eubank.

Well actually, Watson was courageous, perhaps his corner was stupid?

Which may mean Eddie Futch showed courage to tell Smokin' Joe he was not coming for the 15th against Ali in the Thrilla.

Joe Gans' two loses against Battling Nelson 1908. He was defending his title and trying to get it back from Battling Nelson while dying of Tuberculosis. He still went a combined 38 rounds.

He died two years later of Tuberculosis.

JG, I believe you're thinking about Dunne's second-to-last fight, his title winning effort against Panamanian Ricardo Cordoba.

Dunne was stopped early in his last fight, his first defence against the tough Thai Poonsawat.

My bad, DM. Like a writer once said about Buffalo Bill, If the myth's better than the truth, stick with the myth.

Topped for courage on the very same card by Billy Collins Jr., who was pounded to a pulp over 10 rounds by Luis Resto -- fighting with virtually padless gloves that had been tampered with by Panama Lewis, perhaps the lowest snake to ever slither on earth.
