By far it was Chris Eubank. The media attention and audiences were beyond compare and he fought 16 world SMW title fights in three and a half years, including an all-time scorcher with Michael Watson, Benn (WBC) and Rocchi (undefeated former IBF) back-to-back, Malinga (future WBC) and Lindell (former IBF) in 12 months with four inbetween, six defenses in 10 months in '94 and robbed against Collins in his backyard on St Patricks weekend! He also fought Joe Calzaghe at 11 days notice and hurt him more than 23 subsequent opponents would. Simply The Best!
:yikes WTF atsch Toney beat nobody of real note at SMW. How was that a better win than for example Collins over Eubank. Theres several I would put above that one
You can't compare Calzaghe with Chris, the gulf in opposition is ridiculous. Mike Watson and Graciano were a class above Kessler. Lindell Holmes and Thornton were a class above Brewer and Mitchell. Benn was in a different universe to Lacy, Reid etc. It doesn't add up. If Eubank retired after Wharton, he could just sit on that unbeaten record like Calzaghe does... but he did more.
His best work was at MW, but he was an elite undefeated SMW champ. I can't ever remember a victory at SMW where the fighter was rated so high P4P and destroyed so easily, with one of the most beautiful performances on film.
#1 Eubank #2 Benn #3 Toney #4 Collins #5 Ward #6 Calzaghe #7 Jones #8 Liles #9 Lindell #10 Froch/Rocchigiani/Nunn
Toney's best work, BY FAR was at SMW. He looked like a renewed, rejuvenated sensation when he went up in weight. The DeWitt, Barkley, Littles and Prince Charles performances were spectacularly good. Jones beat a Toney who was 10-15% tops of his usual SWM self due to being close to 250lbs a few weeks out and nearly died in hospital.
I know the weight excuses, I have heard them, I don't put as much into them as you do.. Roy Jones outclassed Toney, end of story. You do know fighters have to be medically cleared by a doctor right?
An argument can't be made that Toney is a better SMW than Jones Jr.. Jones cleared that fantasy fight up in 94.:good
He fought far better opponents showing far better technical skill. So of course he was a better SMW than Jones.
