It makes you laugh, yet all you've done to counter, is to post someone's opinion from over a hundred years ago.

Today's fighters are faster, stronger and smarter?

As time goes by, not everything progresses.

You can't compare athletes of other sports to fighters.

Just because track and field records have improved, it doesn't mean that a fighters skillset has.

Just because Usain Bolt is the fastest man ever, it doesn't mean that today's fighters are the best ever.

Give me an honest answer to the questions on post 193, on page 13.

holding is illegal tommo. sometimes it is tolerated if they can work inside but holding for holdings sake gets fighters disqualified. Always has. Holding is a necessary evil...... until a fighter gets warned by the reff. However, house fighters get more leeway. Since most fighters you see winning are the promoters blue eyed boy you might think it is allowed. but it is not.

I disagree. larger fighters are slower than smaller fighters. Two large fighters together might look fast enough becsuse they are both as big but against a smaller fighter they are slow. Fighters can also appear faster for longer but that is because they fight in bursts and a lot of it is wasted shoe shining. If the other fighter wont rest the comfort zone the spurt fighter is required is destroyed. Also speed is not a skill it is an asset.

I think you will find box fighters existed many many years ago. Acomplished technitians honed their craft in the clubs, the preliminaries, the undercards on the road over many more fights without tv. I pity the grounding modern boxers are forced to have today, if they cant get it right in the gym its **** or bust on the night, often they cant get a competative match without a title involved.

Tommo, The only reason fighters have moved away from oldschool tricks is because they have been exploring new training techniques. If nobody else is using oldschool tricks why bother? when there was more competition and more competatiive journeymen there was no option but to concentrate on the tried and tested stuff in order to outwit the other guy. They could wrack up points whilst orchestrating a clever knockout opening using subtle, effecient moves. Real art.

Yes it is all still there, the talent certainty is, but less time is spent mastering a lot of this stuff to its full potential. Experts from other sports have begun to have an imput and whilst some of it is beneficial much of it either is not and takes away from the proven art. Boxing is a martial art after all not a power event.

Amateur boxing still provides an excelent grounding for prize fighting but it has become a different sport. Even here the basics are almost unimportant compared to devising a system to beat the computer in tournaments.

For every advance in modern boxing some more of the proven stuff is lost. They are still great fighters but no way are they better. The best fighters are as effective and todays greats can often be the same level as ATGs but once you get below championship level much of it has went backwards.
