After Saturdays bill and seeing the size on Lee Selby it got me thinking. Although he weighed in under/on the limit coming into the fight some say he puts on up to 12lbs. Now I'm just using him as a quick example as off the top of my head he's the first fighter I could think of that puts a lot on, I think canelo does too. Do my question is even though they are technically playing by the rules with the weigh in ect, what do you guys think of it?? Is it fair that a fighter could go in more than a weight class above his opponent? Would you/could you change it? Or does it not make enough diff to worry about?? Some may point to the fact Selby couldn't put the kid away sat, but then look how he demolished swiftly!

Chavez Jr puts on nearly 20 lbs I heard, but no it's not fair.

    Loads of fighters do it.

The obvious argument against doing it is that they then have to focus on weight loss instead of actual technique in camp, and they'll be weakened throughout the camp by the starvation

The alternative is the same day weigh in but then fighters go to the ring dehydrated which increases the chances of injury particularly to the brain

Couldn't they weigh in as they do now, but then have a check weigh in before the fight with a restriction on how much they can be above. That could be set by the commissions or the fighters. That gives them a chance to rehydrate and add a few pounds but not blow up like the likes of Selby, Chavez, canelo, ect

The IBF have a 10lb limit on the morning of the fight

Which is a sensible move in my opinion for safety if nothing else.

It doesn't always work being big at the weight. Look at Froch he isn't big at the weight but he probably naturally makes Super Middleweight easier than any other Super Middleweight in the history of boxing. He's said numerous times that he is so lucky being able to make weight so easily and comfortably. Thats probably why he can fight for 12 rounds and take a shot as good as anyone in boxing because he isn't taking anything out of his body trying to make weight. A lot of these guys who are big at the weight end up moving through the weight divisions and eventually start to look old as fighters becuase they've put their bodies through a lot making weight. Froch weighs the same on fight night as Canelo and Trout do and their light middleweights. Most middleweights weight more than Froch does on fight night and I know for a fact Martin Murray weighs more than Froch does on fight night. But a I've just said Froch's strength is being to make Super Middleweight so easily that it makes him stronger than the big at the weight fighters like Bute he has faced.

Yes but you can get weighed in at 6am if you choose to,which does defeat the purpose somewhat

I understand the concept behind it but dont agree with it, there should definately be a max amount you can put on after weigh in.

Also It cant be good for you to starve / dehydrate over and over again...

Surely the point is that if you are putting so much pressure on yourself to lose the weight in the first place that has a majorly negative effect on other parts of your game?

Yeah could imagine that going down well when people are waiting for main event and someone fails to make the weight .

But i'd say 6 hours before would be suffice which allows fighters to have a meal and concentrate on warm up etc.

If you can do it safely, then do it.

I have no problem with fighters looking to gain advantages LEGALLY, good luck to them.
