if you remove padding in fingers, thumb and wrist area boxing glove is pretty much mma glove.
there's no difference badding in the knuckle area.

hendos chin is overrated. its good by mma standards but not as good as alot of people make it out to be. hes been dropped and hurt several times in his career. jds has an alright chin considering how bad most mma hw's chins are. you certainly see worse punch resistance at the higher levels of mma than you doing in boxing. i mean keith jardine was a top 10 lhw at one point and he just had an abysmal glass jaw. arlovski was a top 5-10 hw for many years and look how bad his chin is.... the list goes on and on. do you remember how cabbage was being hyped up as having an amazing chin? that was until he got knocked up by an old shot abbot lol. the only guy whos chin really impresses me in mma is bj penn tbh and im a huge fan. boxers just tend to have better chins for whatever reason.

First, no. It's just a ridiculous point that a lot of guys keep bringing up.

Second, if you can't recognize that the Silva punch wasn't an arm punch, then you shouldn't call yourself a fan of boxing.

You've clearly never worn them both. The weight, padding, and the means of defense are MUCH different. They are far from the same.

Boxers do not have better chins. They have better defense. Most MMA guys don't know how to take a punch. Boxers know how to take a punch. But it's a common saying, it's the one you don't see that puts you out. MMA guys, being crappy boxers, don't see punches coming. Add in the lighter gloves and of course they're going to look like they have worse chins. They don't. Boxers aren't super human and MMA guys aren't weak. There are just different factors. All things being equal, boxers and MMA guys have equal chins.

And anyone who put Jardine in a top 10 anywhere is an idiot.

Also, how many elite boxers haven't been dropped at some point in their lives? But they get their standing 8 count or a 10 count. Without that, a lot of your elite boxers would have TKO losses in MMA.

I'm telling you, it's not what you think. Consider factors.

defense isnt everything. if you have a good chin you can afford to have not so good defense. all i see in your post is glass jaw denial. keith jardine was definitely a top 10 lhw at one point.he ko'd griffin, beat liddel and lost a close fight to rampage he was definitely a legit lhw for a short period of time. also its been proven that there really isn't that much of a difference between boxing gloves and mma gloves in terms of power, so I don't buy that.

KO'ing Griffin is not an accomplishment. LOL. He beat a declining Liddell. IMO, I never considered him a contender. He was a guy who got lucky twice and eventually fell to where he should've been all along.

Defense isn't everything but it's an important factor. Knowing HOW to take a punch, being able to actually see punches coming so you don't get put out by the one you didn't see....that's important.

I'm interested in this proof you speak of about the gloves being similar though.

Agreed. The spread is never as wide as fans make it out to be. Fight fans are probably the most opinionated and at the same time, most ignorant of all sports fans. Put the 2 together, and you get widely differing opinions both ways.

To properly test this theory, you'd literally have to devise a consistent method to test the strength of someone's punch resistance and accurately measure it. Then test over a hundred athletes based on this criteria.

Nobody would ever spend time and money to do this. And that's why fight fans will always prefer to make pointless arguments and allegorical references to support their point - i.e. boxing chins are better because boxer X has a better chin than MMA fighter Y or vice versa.

It's like the same recurring arguments you hear over and over again about which art is more effective. There will never be a conclusion, just unintelligent arguments and pointless facts.

It is harder to block punches with 4oz MMA glove, but a 10oz Reyes glove has about the same thickness of padding over the knuckles and is every bit as hard as a 4oz MMA glove, and I know this because I own both. If I cracked you on your chin with both you wouldn't be able to tell the difference either... Because you'd be KTFO both times. :yep

:patschYou have clearly not done any research on bare knuckle boxing. I do not have the time nor crayons to explain all of the errors in this post to you.

    Stats?

I'm guessing that during those days men weren't exactly athletic specimens.

I can't watch youtube at work. But my point about using the gloves to defend is a factor. First, not all fights are fought with Reyes gloves. If they were, I'd be willing to bet money that boxing would see a rise in finishes. Now strip the defensive capability of a boxing glove...that would mean more landed punches. More landed punches equal more KO's.

The quotes you used only really confirm my theory. While the higher levels of boxing definitely have better chins, overall, the chins are similar. What makes things look different, as I mentioned, gloves, bad defense, and not knowing how to take a punch.

But chin for chin, there's little difference.
