i meant a prime Curry.....Curry was a briljant boxer who could outbox Hearns....but we will never know for sure......
The words outbox and Hearns do not belong in the same sentence unless talking about him outboxing someone. No one "outboxes" The Hitman.
Curry outbox Hearns?. Not a chance. Not only did Hearns' have an excellent jab, but he was also very busy with it. As I said in my earlier post on this thread, Curry would look to fight Hearns' inside, with right hands bouncing off his head in the process. He was superb inside, certainly better than Hearns. If anyone tries to tell me Hearns was better inside than Curry, then its just as ridiculous a statement as Curry outboxing Hearns.
Once Hearns lands properly, it'll spell the beginning of the end. KO inside 6. Curry can't beat Thomas.
Hearns by stoppage curry even in his prime had a habit of dropping his guard a little on the way out put that with hearns reach advantage and hearns fast accurate power punching and that's not a great situation for curry to find himself in .
What people do not realize is Donald Curry was sick in the Honeyghan fight. He'd had the flu & hadn't been able to train a lot. A 100% Curry would never have lost to Honeyghan. Donalds biggest mistake was letting that guy ,I believe his name was Ackbhar Muhammad or something like that, take control of his career from Dave Gorman. Dave had been with Don since he was a peewee GG's boxer. Another person who did Don wrong was Ray Leonard. He was supposed to be advising Don. Don wanted to move up & challenge Marvin Hagler which though a monumental task would have been a big $$$ fight. Leonard convinced Don to wait but at the time was secretly fixing up his own fight with Hagler. We all know what happened Leonard cast aside Don & fought Hagler himself winning a VERY VERY controversial decision. Curry-Hearns would have been aq great fight that I would love to have seen
I'd give Curry virtually no chance except maybe a slight puncher's chance. Curry's almost as chinny as Hearns, so he can't really afford to exchange with Hearns; and as Steward says, nobody out-boxes a prime Hearns when even Leonard couldn't.
As my user name indicates, I'm a big fan of the mid-80's Donald Curry. One of the best technical fighters of the era. Nobody, including Curry, would outbox Tommy Hearns. Could he catch him with something? Absolutely. I'd pick Hearns by later stoppage.
I think that Curry was @ his best vs McCallum. Finally @ the weight where he belonged. 147 was too low for him for reasons I am not sure about. Maybe he was a really fat man outside of the ring b/c he really was not that big. Hearns was about McCallum's level of a body puncher as well, consider Barkley's ribs after their 2nd fight. Hearns was also harder to outbox than McCallum and was stopped by Leonard for being severely drained himself along possibly other reasons. But if Curry caused a hassle to a prime Nunn, I think that I have to watch it and decide about whether it really was a hassle.
