Holmes became lineal champion via two wins....Norton and Ali. Even though Ali had retired beating the unretired Ali cemented his claim. At that time the corrupt boxing commissions were doing all they could to splinter all championships. It was the beginning of the end really in terms boxing as those knew of it at that time. They realized the more fights they could call championship bouts made them richer....so why not have 2, 3, 4 or more champions? So you saw one commission not rating any of the fighters of another commission .....each going off on their own really with the single thought of padding their pockets. Result was what we have today...mere contenders now had a pathway to be called champion. So being a champion, once a coveted and rare occurrence, became much more commonplace. A championship carried much less worth. One of the reasons boxing is in ruins today.
A good jab was not Tyson's weakness. Jabbing Mike was a recipe for disaster. He was most effective coming at guys popping out a good jab. Got to laugh at the guys saying Tyson would get knocked out.
Holmes in his prime was an excellent all round performer. He did everything well and he had that all time jab. The one think I hesitate in giving Larry the nod over Tyson is.....his jab was so good he relied on it almost too much and his opponents in general could not cope with it. Holmes always dropped that jab so would Tyson be able to time this and counter with his right as he did when he fought a later version of Larry? Would prime Holmes have the reflexes to anticipate this punch and avoid it? I'd pick Holmes and hope he goes into the fight very wary of that Tyson right hand.
i think that even the holmes fans know perfectly that a prime tyson would ko a prime holmes once and again... style smake fights and holmes was 105% made in order of tyson, (but of course that they will talk crap, but still it will not change the truth) mistake numer 1_he would not dance during all the fight, and he woul dneed it against tyson based on their styles. mistake number 2_ holmes got angry and he traded blows with punchers and this one would be his last mistake with tyson. mistake number 3_ holmes was hurt seriously and dropped by guys who had a good right hand, but they were not as fast as tyson, as aggressive, as fast and much less as good finisher as tyson. mistake number 4_ old holmes 88 weighed 225 pounds, yes, he was older and more slow but sure that he was heavierand physically stronger than a prime young holmes who weighed barelly 209 pounds, the 225 pounder holmes could not handle the fury of tyson in the clinch, the 209 pounder version of larry would get smashed like a little insect(spinks weighed 212 against tyson), ali is the stylist to beat tyson because he would dance during all the fight, he had a better chin than holmes, he had more stamina, he was not a dumb who did trade blows with punchers, he was faster than holmes, he had a much faster footwork. tyson would ko holmes always
Yes only if Tyson turns up after clubbing until the early hours of the morning, having *** and taking drugs then maybe Holmes has a chance
:roflpatsch You cannot become lineal champion by beating a guy who retired and gave up his belt. Lineal champion treats it as if there is only 1 belt. If the champion is stripped and another guy is given a title, he doesn't become the lineal champ because he didn't beat the lineal champion for it. If a champ retirees he loses the lineal title. It goes to whoever captures his belt. This was not Holmes. There is a good argument that he never became lineal champion because he never won Ali's title that Ali had before he retired. When Ali came back from retirement to fight homles, he was not champion, he held no belts and was a challenger. How can you have a fight where no one is lineal champion, and a lineal champion does exist, but transfer that title over to the guy who refused to fight the TRUE champion? It makes no sense and stinks to high heaven. Larry couldn't win the wba title so they just said, well he beat Ali (after ali had given up his title 2 years earlier) or he beat norton (a guy who never won the title but was given a belt because spinks chose to rematch ali). This left a peculiar state where the most consistent fighter with a belt, was not the true champion because he couldn't beat half the division. Larry could have very easily become the wba champ, he had 48 fights before taking a single loss. Was certainly one of the top 10 heavyweights of his time, yet he chose not to unify or obtain belts that would have made him the only champ...WHY? After getting a whipping by carl williams, snipes and a bunch of other subpar fighters like old man norton, it was clear he couldn't beat half the guys around. Just look at how he struggled against spinks and williams and how tyson finished them both in 1 round. It is an utterly ******ed argument, Tyson ko'ed an undefeated heavyweight in 1 round, who knocked out gerry cooney in 6 and who beat holmes twice. Tyson knocked out Holmes in 4 rounds and holmes just got beat down the entire time. People try to say his old age and him being fat. Norton was OLDER, and Norton still gave 15 hard rounds where he whopped Holmes. If Holmes was half as great as norton he'd last more than 4 rounds. Holmes being fat was an ADVANTAGE. When Ali wanted to absorb all those punches he GAINED WEIGHT, when Foreman came back and didn't get knocked out despite being beaten with elbows in the head from holyfield, HE GAINED WEIGHT, gaining weight insulates one from punches. Had Larry been at his prime, he would not take those punches.
