Even, but leaning toward Rocky who was more a body-up and push guy. My image of Dempsey is a bobbing and hook boxer puncher...yet he could lean in and exchange leather all day.

Dempsey easily. Maricano did not move around the ring to stick and move. He ploded and cornered and found his range. Dempsey peppered around the ring sticking and moving until he could unleash his rapid combinations.

The Rock. 5 seconds of mat time in 49 fights. Off the deck both times to win the bout by KO. Small and not a defensive master he made the best out of a tough chin and subtle defense. Dempsey was tough being dropped out of the ring by Firpo but usually he was testing other guys toughness.

Even. They would go as long as it took. I might favor Maricano because he was able to fight at the same level his entire career where I think Dempsey fell off a little at the end.

Dempsey. Head movement, rolling defense, jabbing, slipping, countering, infighting. He had it all.

I take Rocky here. Charles and Walcott on the nights the fought Maricano would take all of Dempsey opponents on the night fought Dempsey and P4P.

Maricano. Ruled the divison for three years with blood and KO's.

Maricano was beloved and overcame more physically limitations to KO just about all challengers and retire undefeated. Dempsey was kinda worshiped then and today. Historically I say Dempsey, although my heart goes with the Rock.

I would take Dempsey in a head to head match because he is so fast and hit so hard. He would look similiar to Ezzard Charles but with more power and more killer. I would take in on points. That reason is why I rank him higher than Maricano.

I love rocky Marciano, having seen him ringside almost killing Carmine Vingo, and training
later at Grossinger's, but if ever a fighter was meant for the prime Jack Dempsey to beat it was Rocky Marciano...Dempsey was a killer in close with blurring handspeed and accuracy. Marciano needed punching room for his grenades and even at his best MISSED half of his punches...Dempsey hit faster inside ,seldom missed and needed 5 inches to
send his powerful punches to ko a man...Dempsey was as Nat Fleischer wrote "amazingly
strong ", and would certainly ,as Gen Bedford Forrest said, " get there fustess with the
    mostess". Dempsey by early ko...

I think both were very good machines. Dempsey at his best must have been a marvel. To have so many fights and still be within a physical prime must give prime Jack an edge. That said, Jack was a pretty inactive champion. Marciano was deceptively effective, everything he did seemed to work. He always got there in the end and cleaned out the division. Whilst Dempseys superiority was never in dispute he didnt exactly clean out.

Dempsey hurt everyone he fought and so did Marciano. Dempsey had more speed but i think Rocky was harder to hit clean. Firpo should not have landed a glove on him.

If they ever fought it would not be an easy win for either man. Certain champions reach a level in their primes where they wont be beat until a decline sets in and there is only ever room for one champion like this within an era. Putting two together like this I can see both winning but feel Rocky could win a serries 2-1 losing the first then woring Dempsey out by the end.

Who you prefer/rank higher and why? H2H or greatness? Either way Marciano. The only HW champion who retired undefeated, also the highest KO percentage. Fought tougher opponents, bigger legacy, universally recognized name etc.

15 rounds, both at their peak, who wins? Marciano early KO.

In terms of skill Dempsey was closer to Louis than Marciano. You can only really compare Marciano to Dempsey in terms of punching power.

Choklab, thanks for reading my post and even critiquing my list. I rank my list purely on who I think beats who on thier best night. Accomplishment are one thing but all that goes out in the ring.

I think Liston's skill set and power to beat everyone below him. Against Foreman he jabs and rolls his way out of danger and starts landing his own leather. Frazier would facing a guy who hit as hard if not harder than Foreman and at the same time having better defense then both of them, Lennox was big but ,that is the only advantage he would have over Liston, I see Liston putting a hurting on Lennox, Maricano and Dempsey will have their moments of success with Liston but neither one is a versatile as Sonny who can bang or box and transistion smoothly from one to the other. With that said I can Dempsey and Maricano beating Liston because they can more than likely get inside of Liston who was not slow but was not fast either, make him work hard consistanly and run the bigger fighter's energy down.

Heavy_hands. Get a list up please and then talk to me. Also give your reasons for why you have who ranked where. Try to do it without a insult or snide comment and be prepared to handle like a grown-up any critizism you get for your list. If you can do that I will do 50 push-ups the first moment I have. I could use the work but, I probably won't have to do it will I?

Tommo. You already know. I can barely read your posts anymore. Lennox Lewis at number 1? Same guy who was flattened by Hasim Rahman and Oliver McCall and had to get yelled at like a rookie to finish off Mike Tyson who was ready to go for like three rounds. I could go on and on about Lennox. Should have dominated old and small Holyfield. Timid as a church mouse with Tua...He is your number one.

Rahman KO's most of my list? Yet you don't have him on your top ten all-time list. Please, don't respond. You win!

sonny liston? lmao, liston did beat a former mw, natural lhw and fragile 188 pounder in floyd patterson who was made in order of liston stylistically and who more? cleveland williams? ali made him look a complete garbage twice, and he lost against marshall when he was young , he never did anything special.... over george foreman? the oldest hw champion of the world, he destroyed in 2 rounds 2 men who did beat ali, joe frazier is a top 10 hw hands down and he was 29 years old undefeated when foreman destroyed him, foreman was competent in his 40s against young top guys like morrison and holyfield(foreman fought 12 rounds against a peak evander) foreman won the title 2 times and he did it after he was retired during 10 years and he was older than 40 years old, and he won by ko against michael moorer who did beat evander holyfield.. evander holyfield , lewis and frazier under liston? if you are talking about h2h, then the list is more debatable but still i disagree... liston never proved that he was that good h2h.

Liston cleared the field before finally getting his title shot. Very dominant hwt leading up to winning the title. Unfortunately for him he ended up winning the title late in his career and he ran into Ali.

Liston koed prime Williams twice. The Williams Ali fought although still a dangerous opponent was no longer a prime fighter.

Again Liston cleared the field prior to winning the championship....a great and dominant achievement. He beat the true champion and won again in a rematch. If Ali never existed Sonny may have well held the title until Frazier and age would beat him very late 60's.

Foreman accomplishment of coming back after so many years and regaining the true championship is possibly the greatest achievement in all of sports....very remarkable. certainly one of the greatest of champions. He makes my top 10 while Liston is slightly below in the 11-13 range.

That top 10 is not bad at all. Personally I'd rate Liston and Frazier lower. Frazier is not beating Dempsey as an example. Good list.
