my wife mentioned Bugner last night, and it occurred to me, Bugner too was a S-HW in stature, which of course sent me into todays HW scene which is really S-HW. Bugner was Skilled, Durable and Tough, he was a league above many of todays marauding sloths.

So does Joe & Carl the Truth and a few other S-HWs from a once better time in HW history knock **** out of Fury, Price and whom ever else you care to mention?

    IMO yes absolutely!

Joe had all the physical tools to be a force in todays HW picture. Now if he only had the psychological ones as well.

What psychological problems did he have? Was he a serial killer?

Joe had size and a good chin but his style was really not effective. He was not a puncher nor a boxer and most of his wins were close decisions (what was his best KO?

He may do as well today top 10 but losing to the best

Joe got Ko'd in his Pro debut (at 17 as i recall) later on one of his early opponents Died after the Fight, Joe was an Hungarian refugee fleeing to the Uk as a child, perhaps these all conspired to give young Joe the mindset of doing just enough get through with no real desire to hurt anyone or create waves, the only times i recall Joe Digging in and firing back with real intent was when he was hurt and dropped by Joe Frazier in the 1oth round, Joe was lucky it wasnt a 15 rounder, also i think a bit of Needle with Richard Dunn who he was supremely confident of beating caused him to fly out of the blocks with uncharacteristic venom...

For Boxing ability- mobility, Joe fell in the Jimmy Young, Carl Williams, Larry Donald sector...Not quite Ali, Holmes but on their night could be a long hard nights work.

He had the potential but not the real belief that a champion requires- i don't see how fighting in another era would have given him that extra mental toughness. Still, both Klits (and Haye) would beat Bugner fairly convincingly, so surely the thread starter wasn't including absolutely 'everyone'? Carl Williams never had that extra mental toughness either so it puzzles me why some people think if he stepped in to the modern game, all-of-a-sudden he would have that extra edge and belief that clearly wasn't his forte. Being a real 'champion' takes a lot more than some physical tools and boxing skill.

No Not the Klits, LL or a David Haye on perfect form, but damn near all the rest. especially the hype jobs like Fury and such.

Yeah, I'd like to think so. Still, Bugner was one of the those fighters I wouldn't bet a penny on.

Both Fury and David Price would have won a UD over Bugner.
Carl Williams would have more probably than not beaten Bugner , Fury and Price .
Bugner (almost) always found a way to lose.

    Fury & Price aren't in Bugner's league...

Man have we forgot what Top level boxing is because we've settled for so much sub level regularity!
