and Sr. gave SRL a good fight, even while bring injured, why do so many feel that FMJ would have no chance against SRL? I don't think Sr. is anywhere near as good as Jr. is? Thought?

Mayweather Sr fought Ray Leonard with a broken right hand...if would've been 100 he would've beaten Ray that night.

Been thinking about this for a while, and I really think it could go both ways. I'd even favor Floyd over Leonard (at 147 of course).

The broken hand meant that he was using it more for defense. If he throws it more, he gets countered more against a fighter who was simply a lot better than he was.

Floyd Jr. does about as well as Benitez did agianst SRL. Maybe better, since he might avoid being flashed and could make it to final bell. But he ain't beating Leonard at welterweight.

SRL was a smaller version of Ali he had fast hands and quick feet, but had no where near the IQ of Floyd Mayweather Jr...and if Sr was able to throw that right hand that night it would've told the tale differently.

Floyd Jr outboxes Ray I mean takes his heart...and without that SRL is Meldrick Taylor...80's fighters are over glorified I swear.

Hmm, from looking at the Leonard/Mayweather Sr fight again:

When Leonard started opening up (round two onwards) he had the clear edge. In round three he treated Mayweather like a heavy bag. At the end of round four he hurt him again. Mayweather had a surprising comeback in round 5, using the jab and some combinations. Leonard won the sixth with better punches. Leonard beat Mayweather up at the end of the seventh. In the eighth, Mayweather is once again punched around the ring, and dropped for the first time. Leonard is clearly in control in round nine. Leonard stopped Mayweather in the tenth.

Mayweather's strengths in the fight were his toughness, handspeed, jabbing and awkward defence. I wouldn't say that he gave Leonard serious problems though...at most, you can give him two close rounds (the first and the fifth). He got beaten up for about five or six rounds. Even if Mayweather hadn't been injured, I still don't think he would have won. He was getting hurt too badly when Leonard landed with flush power punches, and while his defence was pretty good, Leonard was still able to find ways around it. (The main things that worked for Leonard were the left hook to the head and sweeping right to the body.)

Mayweather Jr versus Leonard would be much more competitive, but I still think Leonard wins. He has handspeed, footspeed, power, natural size, adaptability, stamina, a great chin, solid boxing skills and great combinations. If Mayweather tries to fight him, he'll be outgunned and beaten. If (and this is the more likely scenario) he tries to outbox him, he'll have success in spots and win rounds, but Leonard will eventually become more aggressive, like he did with Hearns, and he has the offensive tools to catch Mayweather consistently and hurt him with one of those fast left hooks or right hands while Mayweather is leaning away. Even if Mayweather dodges most of the shots, a couple will get through. Mayweather's superb defence means that he'll get to the cards, but Leonard will win on points. His combinations will get him the close rounds, and he has the stamina to keep doing that without fading down the stretch.

I didn't realise that the name Mayweather = *******ism.

Leonard comfortably won that fight, and if it was Jr in the ring he would have easily won that fight too. The guy simply found a way to win. I don't particularly like him, but credit where it is due.

Either way, the majority of people on this forum, (mostly old timers that watched the fab 4 in the 80s) will ALWAYS say SRL will beat FMJ. But either way, we will never know!

I also feel that fighters of the past are over glorified. I watched many of the big fights as a kid and some of the again as an adult and I don't see this huge difference of skill. I think many of the best fighters of recent times would do just fine in the past. IMO, If Floyd were ever to beat SRL, it would be with his boxing IQ & defense, using them to take Rays best weapons away from him.
