great lightweights of the 1940s...Have you seen Ike Williams fight ? Have you seen him ringside at his devastating best ? To vomit up garbage that Duran "walks through " a vicious punching Ike Williams tells me that you better study your boxing history sir, and don't spout nonsense...It is frustrating to me to contend with some posters who think that boxing didn't exist before television...Duran was a great lightweight who was fighting in a weak lightweight time, who quickly gained weight and became a welterweight...Ike Williams fought in a great lightweight division of fighters who had each over 100 bouts as LIGHTWEIGHTS, knew every trick of the trade by fighting the best contenders and OFTEN.

When past his best, Ike took punches from Carmen Basilio, a big strong welterweight. So I have no doubt he could take them from Duran.

So far you've suggested that Roberto would KO Sammy Angott (a crazy claim considering that it's something a prime Sugar Ray Robinson couldn't even do in SEVERAL fights), and now you're suggesting that he would "walk through" Ike Williams. Both claims are silly. You have nothing to back this up with and you need to do some more research.

 

I agree. He obviously needs to study more on both Angott and Williams. Then maybe he'd see how silly his proclamations are and reconsider.

I should have been a bit more clear. I was talking more about the 1930s-1940s, when modern style jelled and became commonplace after Benny Leonard and others opened the door in the 20s.

Not really. If you're not fighting, you're not training (why would you?). And if you're not training, you're not in shape. And you've got too much time(and money) on your hands, so what else to do but dissipate? To suggest that guys who fight a couple times a year are anywhere near in as good a shape as guys who fight every week or month is unsupportable.

Would have Esteban DeJesus have dumped the middleweight Duran twice as he did when Roberto had the frame of a 135 pounder? Of course not, how the grown larger Duran did as a 165 pounder has no comparison to how a fight at lightweight with Ike would have gone. Roberto was very careful in his last two fights with DeJesus as he could not,,,,walk right through him anymore then he could have with Ike. He boxed at his best and landed his shots along the way avoiding being clipped hard again until Esteban was ready to go, but it was close all the way,,,much less how he would have had to boxed and slipped at his highest not have been hurt by the great Ike Williams.

His argument basically breaks down to "Duran knocks them all out or walks right through them just because I say so". No logical or reasonable argument presented to back up his claims.

I'm still waiting to hear how Sugar Ray Robinson can't KO Sammy Angott in several tries, but Duran KOs him.

 

Duran kayoes the clutch Buchanan style if you catch my drift.

 

What seems to be overlooked in many of these arguments is Duran's defense. That would be the key to him beating many of the fighters mentioned. His ability to avoid a punch by slipping it rather than backing up, then quickly countering, would be the important, and would the body punches he loves to throw.

 

So if you happen to believe, Duran walks through Williams... that is to "vomit up garbage" and "spout nonsense"? I don't get it - I thought that was simply a poster expressing an opinion, and not a personal insult against anyone.
