Why doesnt more Mayweather opponents allow him to be the aggressor?

  1. They think that pressure is the way to beat Floyd so they pressure and get countered all night then mentally break down

Sorry if something like this has been said, don't have time read all responses...I'm thinking they figure it's better to have Floyd in a defensive dominantly position than an offensive one....

The speed and Floyd's skill. When Floyd potshots, he often does something to cover his bases if he misses the punch(clinches, ducks, doesn't extend himself) and typically Floyd is too fast to counter successfully even disregarding that, you have to have considerable physical gifts to catch him. Zab was somewhat successful at doing this back in the day, but Floyd walked him down, took away the mistake factor, and Zab pulled his usual fade job after a fast start. Guerrero tried to counter Floyd and was just way too slow to catch him. Canelo has fairly quick hands, but doesn't have the foot speed for it.

Floyd is probably better coming Forward he just does not get the chance to do it very much. Most guys think that they have to get the early rounds in their advantage to have a chance and they are correct. The problem is Floyd gets better each round.

Yeah, Zab is the only who had any success (winning the first 6 rounds and scoring a KD in Round 2 :yep) But eventually Floyd DID walk him down in a mistake-free 7th-12th Round. That fight was actually one of the best tactical fights I have ever seen. And although I lost my ENTIRE ASS betting on Zab that night, I can admit that fight is a true testament to Floyd's ability to adjust to any style.

Also, Shane was getting walked down the entire fight from the end of Round 2 (after he stunned Floyd) til the final bell. So yeah, If Floyd needs to walk your ass down he can do it. And the beating is actually worse.

I agree. Floyd brings the heat when needed.

What if he hurts his hands fighting Canelo though? Surely his hands would need to be 100% in this fight especially. I think Canelo takes hell of a punch :bbb

It is a total myth that Mayweather is ONLY a counter puncher. If he thinks you need putting in your place by him being aggressive he will do it. What he does is force the other guy to make mistakes then punish them to such good effect, that they don't know what the fvck to do next.

I wouldn't say force them to make mistakes but maybe make them pay for their mistakes, and you are right by midway in the fight most guys are lost on what to do next.

funny you say that I completely agree with you, I don't know about Cory winnin but that woulda been a really tough fight for Floyd. his was fleet
of hand and feet, shot the jab, came over with the right hook. Cory was
    a real spoiler

Judah did it surprisingly well for a few rounds, but the problem is that he's not really a back foot boxer. He's not as effective when you push him back and put him under serious pressure, which is how Tszyu, Baldomir and Cotto all beat him. Mayweather just did the same thing, in his own way -- kept coming forward and nailing him with right hands and body shots until Judah's stamina and confidence vanished.

I actually saw another recent example of this approach...Cotto tried it against Mayweather and pulled it off well in round six, due to his movement and jabbing.

Ortiz tried it now and then, but didn't have much success. He actually had more success when he attacked, but I think that's because Ortiz is far from a technical boxer type. Guerrero was trying to counter Mayweather to the body in the early rounds, and he landed a good shot doing that, but Mayweather adjusted to it and it stopped working. I think Mitchell also tried to fight Mayweather by retreating and boxing on the outside, but he didn't have much success either, except for some moments here and there.

None of these guys had the tools to outbox Mayweather -- Judah had the most success because of his speed and boxing ability, but he lacked the ring intelligence, ability to box well when under consistent pressure and stamina to get the job done. I can't think of any fighter who could do it today, really. The only one that comes to mind is Rigondeaux, and he's obviously not the same size as Mayweather. (If he was the same natural size, it would be a very interesting match.)

You can't allow someone to do something. The whole point of allowing someone to be the aggressor is if you are able to take advantage of openings. Let's look some things here.

    1. Floyd is faster than 95% of his opponents
    2. He's got longer reach than 95% of his opponents
    3. He's got faster feet than 95% of his opponents

If you allow him to lead, he'll hit and be out before most fighters can react. That's what happened with Guerrero and Gatti. He'll pot shot from the outside and move out of range. He'll keep doing it until 1. You get broken down or 2. force you to lead because you can't counter him.

You don't try to box a boxer because they're more physically gifted than you. You have pressure him and try to neutralize his physical advantages.
