Why do some peple say Canelo is too green for this fight?

I've heard plenty of people bring this up, like "Mayweather is taking on a green Canelo before he becomes too dangerous", which to me is grasping at straws at it's finest.

Let's start with Canelo's age, 23, and make some comparisons. Mike Tyson won the HW title at 20 and by age 23 was undisputed. Tommy Hearns came within an inch of beating SRL at age 22 in an ATG classic. Canelo's late countryman Salvador Sanchez had already established himself as an ATG when he DIED at age 23.

Now, to be sure, this doesn't mean that every talented 23-year old is ready for this kind of fight. But Canelo has had 43 fights, has been a professional for 8 years and has been to the 12th round 8 times.

Ofcourse, some people will talk about his level of opposition, but i like the fact that he believed in himself enough to actively seek out the best and stylistically most challenging opponent in his weight class, allegedly against the wishes of his handlers, and then proceeded to get the job done and prove himself the best in his division.

Also, although this is surely the biggest event he's been involved in, Canelo has been a big star in Mexico for several years. He's used to camera's and bright lights, and he didn't seem negatively affected in his last fight by fighting in front of 40000 mostly Mexican fans in the biggest fight of his life.

Bottom line: i still favor Mayweather to win the fight. But it won't be because of Canelo's 'lack of experience'.

I think its a great opportunity for canelo. its not going to ruin his career. but to answer your question, I guess we wont know until fight night

if I were showtime, i'd already be lining up Floyd - canelo 2 and 3 because theres nothing else out there that will sell like this will

 

The fight still wouldn't happen unless both fighters were willing. Anyway, i don't care too much about the behind-the-scenes stories or the economic reasons for making the fight, i'm just excited that it's happening and i get irritated by some 'fans' who relentlessly try to search for reasons to **** on this fight just because they don't like Mayweather or they have an issue with Golden Boy, that's why i started this thread.

That's the point. He's a smallish WW who's taking on a natural JMW, who will probably grow into 160 1-2 years from now.

 

Floyd fighting oscar and cotto at 154 was only because they were blown up welters

this is new territory, and Floyd didn't carry to 154 well

 

DLH was proven at 154 and moved there in 2001. I wouldn't exactly consider him blown up when he has been campaigning there for years. A blown up JWM would be Mayweather when he fought DLH, someone who moved up for one fight only to return down where he belongs. That's the definition of "blown up" in my opinion.

 

Oscar came from the same origins as Floyd, its a weight he moved into but canelo slots into 154 without any thought of $$$

I agree with Scar in so far as that De la Hoya was a full-blown, well settled JMW when Floyd fought him, and Floyd wasn't as filled out a WW then as he is now. I'm tempted to say Canelo is still a stronger and bigger JMW all the same, but then i think of the way DLH blasted out Vargas and i wonder if present day Canelo could have done the same. He might have, but it's very much open to question.

Still, let's not forget that that was a 30-year old Floyd against a 34-year old DLH, whereas this is a 36-year Floyd against a 23-year old Canelo. All in all, i think this one is a slightly bigger challenge for Floyd.
