This myth has been conclusively refuted. There was an existing tear which Dundee worsened, brought to the attention of an official at ringside, but it was quickly agreed that they would have to continue with the existing gloves. The time between rounds has been timed at 66 seconds.

Dundee embellished the story to enhance his own legend, and Cooper for obvious reasons rehashed the myth in interviews, biographies and the lucrative after-dinner circuit in the UK.

Regardless of what Hauser suggests in his book, the additional 6 seconds were unlikely to be crucial, considering how Ali tore Cooper a new one from the moment the 5th round started. While Ali was genuinely hurt by the knockdown, throughout his career he demonstrated an uncommon ability to recover from being dazed. There is every reason to believe that he would have been able to weather the storm against Cooper, even if the punch had been in the centre of the ring at the beginning of the round, without smelling salts or split gloves being a factor.

I was a kid I was at that fight. I was there to see Enery shut Clay's mouth. That was longer than 66 seconds between the 4th & 5 th round that's for sure. Had Cooper landed that hook a few seconds before he did history could have been re written. I admit I went to that fight to see Clay beaten & silenced but left the fight a life long fan of The Greatest. Poor Henry didn't know what hit him in the 5th round Clay sliced hi9s face to pieces

To compare Mayweather to Ali is like comparing a yappy poodle to a German shepherd. Ali fought all comers, never ducked anyone ,was forced to take a ludicrous 3 yr hiatus, came back no where near the fighting machine he was before but still dominated the HW scene.
Mayweather has had every opponent hand picked. He's avoided all the dangerous fighters along the way. Refuses to fight anyone outside his hometown of Vegas where he knows he'll get "looked after".
Ali would have literally played with & tormented both Klitschko's to say either would beat Ali in his prime is ASININE!!!!!!!!!!!

Ali was knoccked out by a skiny light heavyweight, and he had a terrible ko percentage.
Many of the fights he won were robberies.
Go watch Ali vs Jimmy Joung. He lost it.
and tell us Jimmy Joung would have any chances, against today's guys.

Who'd win Ali or GGG? :rofl

  11. Ali started in LHW .. if they find a weight, which is fair for both, I would say without a doubt GGG. There is no one boxer in the history, who could win whith his entertaining style against a good, old European boxing school.

wow, Ali was knocked down when he was 19 or 20 by Henry Cooper
WOW again, 16 years after Ali turned pro, he barley beat Jimmy Young
the points you make are laughable and invalid :rofl
