so when cleverly beats kovalev easy on sat are you all going to say he was just a hype job who never beat anyone?
I'll laugh my ass off when Terry O'Connor rushes in to stop the fight at the first jab Cleverly throws
Kovalev is no Lacy, if Cleverly manages to beat a dangerous puncher with very good boxing skills like Kovalev, I will acknowledge him as a top 3 LHW btw, I do hope the ref doesn't f\/ck up this fight with one of his trademark stoppages
I think Cleverly will lose but I have said from the start the major credit I give him for taking this fight. If he wins fairly, If will be a big win for him.
Amen to that!WTF is wrong with the WBO and the local Commission putting someone like O'Connor refereeing a fight of this importance?:nut
kovalev does look powerful i give him that, cleverly has the better work rate & a great chin, kovalev hooks are to wide, clev can smash him down the pipe
He will be no.1 imo...Ive always said Cleverly would beat Hopkins. Clev's style is a nightmare for him , plus Hop wanted nothing to do with him.
Well, if Clev wins (without Terry O'Connors 'assistance') I will give all props to Clev 'cos Kovalev's a big step up. I don't go down the path of slating boxers who lose, and anyway, it's beyond me how anyone can call Kovalev hyped. The only 'hype' he's ever had are from boxing fans who have seen him fight - he's only been with his promoter (Main Events) for 2 fights, and they've not exactly done much to build him up. Prior to fighting on NBC (4 fights total) far from carefully selecting opponents, he was just fighting whoever he could just to get recognition and to pay for food, board and training. So, I'll be disappointed if Kovalev loses but happy for Clev (unless there's some blatant home cooking) and no, I'll not be calling Kovalev a hypejob, but will instead be looking forward to his next fight. Apparently Kovalev had a number of robberies go against him in the ams due to Russian boxing politics (one of the reasons he turned pro) and the single blot on his record (- the Tech Draw vs Young) also looks to have been a result of bad reffing, so I'll be very disappointed for him if he gets another bad decision.
Kovalev is a solid prospect. Cleverly wins this will be the best win of his career. Actually the best win of either's career no matter who wins. Good matchup
I tend to agree that Kovalevs level of opposition has been stepped up very sharply, but I don't think he's really had a great deal of choice in the matter of selecting his opponents, just taking what he's given, and having smashed his way to a title shot, what's he supposed to do? In this circumstance Cleverly doesn't really have an edge since his opposition has been fairly uninspiring also, but he does have a lot more rounds (as a pro) under his belt. Campillo is good - a lot better than his record suggests, but he's also one of the most robbed guys in boxing with two 'German' decisions against Murat and robberies against Shumenov (WBA champ) and Cloud. I'm actually really hoping he wins his fight this Friday, cos the poor fukker deserves it.
Someone do the honours of bumping everyone that is picking Cleverl after the fight I be bumping the Garcia ones when that happens
if clev wins legitimately, he deserves to be recognized as one of the top 3 light heavyweights and in the top 20 lb for lb. it's a dangerous fight for him and he's showing a lot of heart and the desire to be great by just taking the fight. something a countryman of his that fought around his weight refused to do for years.
I will give Cleverly props even if he loses and makes it competitive, because I actually doubt he'll be able to. If he somehow manages to win (without it being controversial of course), I'll give him mad props and rate him at the very top.
I second that, certainly since Kovalev is by a distance the most dangerous guy he's fought. It is remarkable though, that Clevs managed to remain a champion for so long without fighting anyone more dangerous than Murat.
