Bellew brands Kovalev a "Hype Job"

Just watch the videos, Kovalev is far in front of anyone that Cleverly or Tony Bellew have fought. He's much more dangerous than any other fighter out there. I think we see the difference between a great power punching hungry fighter who is coming to win and the usual standard USA club\European\Fringe world class "opponents" who come to survive.

If Cleverly wins he deserves huge credit.

If this guy is a hype job, what are the last 5 opponents of both Cleverly and Bellew then? ATG's ? Dangermen? The next big things? Former world champions? (That's not having a dig at anyone in particular it's just stating fact)

People should not be bashing Cleverly for taking this opponent and Kovalev should be given great credit for coming to Wales and taking the fight also and providing an entertaining all action style with knockouts. :good

 

Given Clev's fight record what is more likely, they see him as a hype job or they've decided to take a huge step up for a voluntary defence?

 

Kovalev would probably be made mandatory sooner rather than later anyway.
Perhaps they decided to take Kovalev now when there is no-one else around.
Brave choice of opponent. The first real acid test. Going into a fight against a big puncher when many expect you to lose. He has home advantage though.

 

It is worth remembering that prior to the Campillo victory, Kovalev was no-one. OK, yeah, he had the big KO stats, but they were against unknowns ('cept perhaps Boone), but it was only after the consecutive Boone and Thompson KOs that anyone gave a damn (Main Events), and only after wiping out Campillo that HBO took interest. A lotta people thought the Campillo win down to his lack of focus (Gabrielle reckoned he was physicslly, but not mentally at his best in the fight). Indeed, despite finding Kovalevs wins pretty spectacular, I felt the same - like, this guy surely ain't gonna carry on KOing top 10 fighters like that.

But then he did the exact same thing to White.

Kovalev has sure as fukk has come up quickly, but not because of selective opposition, or a big promoter selling him right, just because he keeps knocking people out early rounds.

No-one has hyped him 'cept the fans who have seen his fights.

Cleverlys offer was made before the White fight, when aside from a possibly jet-lagged Campillo he had basically no-one on his resume. The White KO tells us little, cos' White was shaken early in the fight and never got himself together, but I suppose Clev coulda pulled out if necessary, even though the offer was on the table. Perhaps Clev does see Kovalev as a hype job, though I believe Bellews intention is both to belittle Cleverly and the fight itself. Either way, Clev had better bring his A game, and tell his Mum to stay at home on Saturday.

 

Kovalev KO'd White in 3. White had already been KO'd in 1 by a no mark before this though.

Don George has a pretty reasonably KO ratio and had a good record going into that fight. Later George was beaten in the 12th round by Adonis Stevenson. (Ring and WBC champ) So a no mark fought the current Ring\WBC champ in an IBF eliminator and went into the 12th round?

Whichever way you look at it, Kovalev has maintained his power as he has moved up the levels. The ones he has beaten in 3 rounds or so have been a former world champion and fighters at world title eliminator level.

 

I just don't put much faith in fellas who get sparked in 1 round. I think Kovalev is a good fighter with good power. Just don't know exactly what he's about yet for me.

What people are completely overlooking in asking whether Clev can take Kovalev's power is what kind of chin has Kovalev got?

He's not that weak a hitter. He's not a Kovalev banger but you can't get thru to where he is with no power at all and Kovalev's only ever had anything put on him as a pro in the first Boone fight in which he was lucky to get a split. Although going by Clev's last 3 fights I'd be fancying Kovalev strongly but the last 3 fights Cleverly's been flat as a pancake with Fr*nk's probs and him going nowhere.

Kovalev lands often and the fights are over, good quality opposition. Cleverly hits the same or lesser opposition and they are still standing at the end of 12 rounds. :good The gulf in hitting power is huge.

 

Yeah I know Kov hits harder. It's Kov's chin I was talking about. I've seen Cleverly taking shots altho this will be the hardest hitter he's come across.

What about Kovalev? Even though Clev isn't a banger have we seen how Kovalev deals with being hit back himself in too many pro fights?
