Not seen it on here elsewhere, Frankie Gavin will defend his British and Commonwealth titles against David Barnes at the Copperbox 21st September (Saunders v Ryder bill)
Good fight, Barnes is another fighter with undoubted talent but sometimes doesn't seem to be mentally ready for the big fights.
Im not usually as cynical about certain fights as others on here but this isnt a great match up for Gavin. Its time he stepped up towards euro/fringe world level. It will be nice to see him win the lonsdale belt outright though but hopefully this is the last domestic fight we see him in. Not saying Barnes is bad but i just think Gavin is above this level now and it would be nice to see him gaining some upward momentum after the Vassel win.
I can remember when Barnes was touted very highly until he got stopped on the Hatton v Tszyu undercard by an TTG
Agree with you there floyd. Hopefully last domestic fight for frankie. Bundu after this then up to world level.
It's not the type of opponent you'd want in an ideal world, but you've got to be a bit realistic on this one. The card already has a ******* in Ryder v BJS, but because of the promotional context it's a fight that they're over-paying for. £100k I believe was the winning bid which is massive for a British title fight. Then there's Chisora on the bill who won't come cheap and nor will his opponent given the profile Del has built with Haye and Klitschko. Paul Butler will want a decent payday too now he's moving beyond domestic level. If Gavin puts on a show, then I reckon they'll step him up next time out against a better name with him as the headline.
Not sure when c r a c k e r became a word that needed to be blanked out? Whatever will we do at Christmas.
I disagree, I think too many fighters step up to Euro and World level without fighting enough different styles. David Barnes will give Frankie something else, he will try to box on the back foot and try his best to counter his way to a win. Frankie will have to show different skills by having to push the pace and try make Barnes make mistakes. I don't think it will be a spectacle to watch but also think it will be invaluable learning fight.
He did but as far as I can remember that has been the only time, at world and even top euro level you can come up against fighters that have no intention of coming forward and the more different styles you can face before reaching the highest level the better imo.
I havn't seen Barnes fight in years since the Okine loss, I thought he'd retired. anybody have any fight footage of him? there doesnt seem to be any out there
Not had chance to check but try coldwell tv on laptop he's one of there fighters so anything recent might be one there
