Boxing is full of fighters hyped off a run of wins where everything went their own way, but you can never assess the merits of a fighter properly until they have had a gut check and shown they can produce their best in the face of adversity. A great example of this is George Foreman. After smashing Frazier and Norton to smitherines, he was seen as unbeatable, they hype surrounding him was huge. Straight after Foreman had brutally knocked out Kenny Norton, Ali was up on the ring apron being interviewed telling a disbelieving reporter why he would beat Foreman, whilst the reporter asked 'How can you beat Foreman when he has so easily beat fighters that you have struggled with?' Its clear styles make fights, Ali basically stated that if a fighter can get past 3 rounds with Foreman, then they can beat him. No one really gave Ali a chance in that fight after his defeats to Frazier and Norton but Ali knew that fighting in adversity is one of the most important facets of the fight game and that Foreman had never had a gut check in his career. Foreman went on to fail that gut check, he had been hyped as invincible, but until a fighter faces that adversity then he is very much an unknown quantity depending how he reacts to it. Can you name fighters that were hyped and then failed their 1st gut check? Is there any current fighters who you feel will fail their 1st gut check in the future?
Victor Ortiz. Maidana broke him down but then against Berto, Ortiz bit down and fought back. Then again Ortiz is not a good shout because Lopez was breaking him down mentally.
Michael Grant the guy was pictured as America's next great HW, then when he stepped up, he got exposed by Golota, and only won because the Foul Pole quit in the 10th round, and then got run over by the Lennox Lewis express, after which he was never the same guy
Bute really failed against Andrade. Anthony Peterson failed against Brandon Rios Devon failed against Bradley Robert G vs Gamaliel Diaz Tyrone Brunson vs Carson Jones Surprising but a lot of fighters actually pass their first gut checks.
true about grant but the golota fight was definitely a gut check. he was down early in the fight and could have quit but came back to win. lennox was on a completely different level from grant.
Lacy vs Calzaghe Mitchell vs Banks Khan vs Prescott Price vs Thompson Wilder in the future for sure, and I can see Mitchell getting stopped again by Arreola.
