I have no idea what that even is. But yes, those fights are the real deal.

MercuryChild, I believe Boxed Ears was being sarcastic. I'm sure that he's seen all of the fights you mentioned. The Classics forum is full of guys who've watched Sugar Ray Robinson ringside and wrote books about the subject.

I may come back with my list but one thing stuck out in my mind.
The Thrilla in Manilla #1 ALL-TIME??? Muhammad orchestrated the timing here, Frazier had beaten him the first time (an eons better fight than Manilla) and Joe had gotten waxed by Foreman. Both had blemishes on their careers and both weren't in any way representitive of their prime selves. Two older legends, past prime, beating the s**t out of each other. Granted a great fight (saw it live closed circuit) but to rank a great fight #1 wouldn't you have to have two fighters at or near prime? Just my $0.02.

It's possible to have a great fight at any point in your career. Archie Moore fought Yvon Durelle when he was 42. Jersey Joe Walcott was still fighting wars with Ezzard Charles when he was 37.

I do understand the point you make. I do see the value in a fight between two great fighters in their prime. My one gripe with Ali Frazier I, and I know that some people do not subscribe to this belief, but there is always that variable of Ali having to go three years without a fight, and going against Frazier in only his third fight back. I myself have trouble with this, and debate internally at how much effect that had, but nonetheless, it is a legitimate issue that puts into question Ali's prime state at that point.

My claim for the Thrilla being #1 rests in that involved were two all time great fighters, arguably the two best of the Golden Age of Heavyweights. They had already fought twice, each earning a win. And now here was their third fight to settle the score. Were they both past their primes? Of course, no argument there. But more so than their previous two fights, these guys pushed each other to the BRINK. They brought out the fading greatness of each other like no one had or would do again, and they both fought the fight of their lives, some would say even seriously putting their lives at risk. It didn't have the prime skill levels of fight #1, it didn't have the build up of fight #1, it didn't have the glamour of fight #1, but what it showed was the final chapter of the greatest boxing rivalry ever, two ring warriors who refused to lose and brought out something in one another which most human beings will never experience, that inhuman will power to keep pushing through impossible limits, and that fight doesn't hide it. I still winch and cringe when I watch it, shaking my head at how incredible those two men were that night.

Yes I saw that fight for the first time a couple months ago, I should watch it again, but off my initial viewing, I have it ranked in the 60s of my list I believe
