Anyone who followed the amateur game knows Lomachenko already has pound for pound type of skills. People talk about Kovalev ( new light heavy champ ) , Golvkin ( New middle weight champ, and Usky ( Making his debut, likely cruiser weight champion.) But for my money on pure talent, Lomachenko is better than all of them. And that's saying a lot since Kovalev and Golvkin are already champions. Many haters will tell you the above guys aren't that great or will wait years until they lose. However in Lomachenko's case, he's a light weight divison boxer, so he might be treated differently.
Pretty impressive opponent for a guy making his debut, even one with an amatuer record like Lomachenko. Oquendo isn't an elite fighter but he's a respectable fringe contender and has to be one of the best fighters anyone has fought in their debut.
Patterson has to be the best and there might be an old time fighter or perhaps a little known or forgotten strawweight sized fighter. But this has to rate pretty high especially for modern times.
Oquendo is an excellent opponent for a guy hoping to make an early splash and ascend the ranks quickly. Oquendo is rugged and has good pop, and I suspect will test Loma at certain points in the fight due to his ring experience. Nonetheless Loma has better handspeed, footwork, and flat out ability and will quite likley stop him late.
rigon in his 3rd pro fight, fought former world title challenger Giovanni Andrade who had 70 pro fights
Ah, but scratch the surface on Andrade - the guy is a joke. Something like 85% of those he beat had losing records. Whenever he steps up - not just to a Rigondeaux, but to anyone with a pulse - he gets demolished.
Rafael Lovera in 1975 challenged Luis Estaba for the vacant WBA light flyweight title. This is remarkable because it wasn't until after the fight that it was found it was Lovera's first match. He was knocked out in 4 and never fought again. In 1892 Jack Skelly challenged George Dixon for the World Featherweight title, some believe it was his first fight, but Boxrec has him fighting one more before then. Skelly finished 6-5-4
In 27 of his 77 fights he fought someone with a .500 record or better. I didn't include those making his debut. I have no idea why I took the time to count that. I am a loser. Carry On.
Any word on TV coverage How many times has Oquendo been stopped and by whom Thanks! I am also curious if Loma and Usyk are preparing in the States? Should be interesting reading anything regarding their prefight preparation in the coming weeks.
Alright, so to be precise I should've phrased it "about 65% of those he beat had losing and 75% had no-winning (incl. losing and .500) records". Mea culpa for shortchanging him. Anyway, having experienced the misfortune of watching Andrade several times - record aside, he is basura. He is an example of a journeyman who is absolutely not better than his record suggests - in fact he is a great deal worse. :yep
This guy ain't no joke. I can't remember an amateur star take on this caliber an opponent in his debut. He must be really confident in his abilities.
