against this current top 10 very likely.
He was foolish in the first fight vs Mayorga
and got clipped. I believe he rectified that
with the rematch. Floyd's a beast but
Vernon had a real good left hand (til that
shoulder went out). That would be a tough
fight for both guys. No one else out could
beat Vernon. Very overlooked because he
wasn't a dynamic fighter. If you were good
he was always just a bit better.

Your mention of how Vernon got clipped by Mayorga put me mind of Vernon's words (rationalization?) when I interviewed him at Wild Card while he was resting from shoulder surgery for a comeback:

VF: I have this unquenchable thirst to be the best at what I do… to not to
have someone say that there were better then me.
So, if I get hit, I don’t want to go down and give this guy
the satisfaction of knowing that he put me down. I don’t want
to lose… to give a guy the satisfaction to say that he beat me. So that’s the thing that drives me. That’s the thing that’s going to make me become champion again. That’s the drive that’s going to make me fight Mayorga again, and all of the best fighters out there in my weight class and beat those guys.

    Q: You brought Mayorga.
    What happened in those fights?

VF: The first time, it was just errors on my part. I
really didn’t think this guy could be in the ring
with me. At that time, I had the prey’s mentality,
as opposed to the predators. The second time, I thought I won
and I didn’t get the decision.

Q: You have the reputation as a puncher and
you landed solidly on Mayorga. Why couldn’t you dent him?
You even landed a combination when he stuck out his chin,
    with his hands down.

VF: I was punching hard but I wasn’t punching with leverage.
I was throwing anger shots. You have to remember, in boxing
you don’t have to hit a person hard to knock him out,
you just have to hit him accurately. I was throwing hard shots, but
it was not really accurate. He was able to brace himself.
He could see the intention in my face when I was about to
throw a punch. So, as a fighter, you just brace for it. The shots that get you are the shots you don’t see. I think that’s the reason he was able to stand up to my punches, because I was throwing a lot of hard shots, not boxing shots, just hard, angry shots.

Forrest era was not really that long ago lol. He do great today, not sure about the undefeated part, may god rest his sprite. He was a credit to the sport and he has been missed since.

Great insight in those words. He got embarrassed going down in
round 1 and attempted to fight fire with fire, instead of just
staying in his role as a boxer. Very underrated guy.

People will always have excuses as to why he lost to Mayorga.

He came out spitting flames the first fight and got put down.

He came out the second fight trying to box and lost a decision.

He lost twice, trying two different methods. It is what it is.

But Mayorga was a bad matchup for Forrest (and if anyone doesn't think the Mayorga that fought him wouldn't be a bad matchup for most of their favorite welterweights in the last decade they better think again)

And theres really nobody that brings that in todays divisions.

    Bradley
    Rios
    todays Pac
    JMM
    Alvarado
    Ruslan
    Ortiz
    Ghost
    Berto

    all get beat handily.... imo.

The Mayweather fight would be great... would have loved to see it.

    Do you lack reading comprehension?

    Let me help you out

    "If Matthysse was bigger"

    and

"Forrest would still be the favorite to win"

and no, he wouldn't be 'destroying' him. Say what you want about Lucas but the dude has a chin.

And the point was that Matthysse, if he were larger, would be the only person close to the 'type' that would really trouble Forrest. A durable pressure fighting power puncher that will put Forrest on the back foot and make him uncomfortable. But even then, one has to think that Forrest would have too much.

    You need to improve.

Perfect example of how death can make a fighter a legend. Forrest, RIP, has always been overrated here. He will always be known as the guy who beat Mosley 2x then turned around and got demolished by Mayorga. MAIN reason
he has a chance against all those fighters mentioned was his size.

I chalk that loss up to Mayorga's very awkward style more so than anything else. It's kinda like being a boxer your whole life then fighting a Muay Thai fighter and getting clobbered with kicks. Something you weren't expecting. Forrest's prime was extremely short lived due to his shoulder woes, and yes, I can admit to mildly over rating the guy at times. But in my eyes it would be a cold day in hell when a monstrous, lightning fast, strong punching Welter like The Viper would have any problem with a blown up Super Featherweight(albeit a very good one). One of those long right hands would send Pac into an involuntary backflip.

Matthysse would be too small for Forrest. Forrest has too much boxing ability, and good feet, as well as the power to keep Matthysse off of him.

Im not sure he would be as dominant as most think. Mayorga ****ing destroyed him the 1st time, and had him running for dear life the 2nd. That is not a champion mentality if you ask me.

If I recall correctly the Mayorga he fought had a different trainer than just after that. That version of Mayorga would have beaten Cotto. That version of Mayorga wasn't nearly as useless as the guy who lost to Mosely, and Cotto.

Also anybody who understands how boxing is scored and thinks Mayorga actually won the rematch, is plain biased against Forrest. There was too high a disparity in actual punches landed(not compubox bogus numbers) to job Forrest on the cards like they did. Yeah Forrest was on his horse, but Mayorga wasn't landing much of anything. That fight is a prime example of how corrup and inaccurate Compu Box is. It was laughable hearing Lampley state that through four rounds Compu Box had Mayorga landing 40 power shots, when in reality Mayorga hadn't landed 15 punches period.

  14. That's a ridiculous analogy.

He got banged out by Mayorga then even after he knew what Mayorga was all about he struggled with him and managed to lose again ( even though I personally had him winning, but he still struggled ). If he can get banged out by someone as wild and sluggish as Mayorga then I'm pretty sure he could of been beat by some of the guys about today.

He had Mosley's number, but didn't do much after that... they are the facts. I can only go off what I seen of him, he was a decent boxer but let's not overrate him to make him out as something he isn't.

I'm pretty sure he would eventually come unstuck in every era.

That Mayorga was a fuking monster dude and he would beat most of the division today and guarantee would force some moments happen vs. Floyd. Floyd couldn't hurt him and he's have zero respect for Floyd and force him into awkward dangerous situations. sure mayweather probably wins, even while he is aging and slowing, but that Mayorga vs. this aging Mayweather would be an interesting fight. Some of those punches Mayorga throws the opponents don't see and don't know they're coming, while some of the technical ones you can see coming from china
