I have added in all the virables to this fight and I simply can't come up with an answer, it is a classic example of fighters with 2 different styles and their advantages offset each other.
Mayorga UD I think a prime, welterweight Mayorga would simply be too active, too aggressive, and want it more, then Ike, who could sometimes let winnable fights be taken from him. I think it would be a very very close, competitive fight, but one in which the judges would favor the aggressor, with there being controversy at the decision and with Ike feeling he won. Mayorga 7 rounds to 5.
Quartey by UD 12. Quartey is a much more technically sound boxer. Mayorga is a beastly fighter and big mouth but that doesn't notch you a decision. Expect a 115-113, 116-112 like decision...
I'd probably go with Quartey by decision, although I wouldn't totally rule out a late stoppage, either. Ike was the more polished boxer, and I think Mayorga's best chance is really just to outwork him. If Quartey's gets that fantastic jab going it's his fight to lose, for me. He bossed De la Hoya in that aspect, as well as Forrest (shocker of a decision) and forced them both on to the back foot, an area where Mayorga was nothing special. Quartey did tire out in the championship rounds now and then, so like I say if Mayorga can outwork him early and set a high tempo he could come away with a win, but I don't think that's the majority call. Quartey by two or three points on the cards.
I say Quartey wins on points . He will CAREFULLY outbox Mayorga . Although Ike will have to dodge a few bombs and probably will still even get caught by a few and might get dazed, Mayorga IS a wild heavy handed puncher . BUT OF COURSE I WILL BE ROOTING LIKE HELL FOR RICARDO MAYORGA ! ! The dude was just so exciting .
Quartey would have stuck that jab in Mayorga's face all night long, fought tentatively and won a clear decision.
Quartey wins with very few problems. Very few welterweights of this era had the pure strength of Ike, I am extremely low on Mayorga, I have no idea why he even rates. He's a clown.
i'd have to watch again but I remember foreman saying Oscar had the better jab and was atleast matching Quartey. The fight did get to a point after both went down that both were rarely throwing but oscar had his odd combo's and bodywork but Ike was just throwing a jab, hesitant to trade with Oscar. Of course until that viscous onslaught and one of the best toe-to-toes in recent history when oscar dropped him in 12th and went after him with all he had pinning Ike in the corner. The speed was amazing when both were trading and throwing caution to the wind finally. Quartey was almost lying on the roaps horizontally and was rocked several times, the ropes did save him from going down again, but the way he recovered and fired back at the end of it was admirable.
he dropped Tito (I think) and gave Tito a good fight until he stuck his chin out giving Tito 2 free left hooks. LOL I swear the second one hurt him and from there fight was downhill for Mayorga.
