The whole "Punchers are born and not made," thing really can take a mental toll on people who desire extravagant punching power that could mow down any opponent. It could also take a toll on those who are beginners or maybe people who just do not enjoy their level of punching power overall. Punchers are not born as much as they can be made but what makes them is something that is built through years of experience, not in a days time. Heavy punching is an attitude whether you believe it or not. This is the first part of my tip so bare with me. 1. Attitude Look at the grimacing look of Hearns. The bloodlust of Tyson. The aura of McClellan, Julian Jackson, and Benn. These guys LOVE to hit. If you cant see it in their face, i dont know what to say but they were hungry to knock your head off. What that means is that their punches were driven with INTENT. If they had a mentality of punching someone and getting out immediately, they would not commit to their power because their first instinct would be to punch and not get their receipt. That basically derails the lust for continual punishment because they would not be there for a possible follow-up punch. By having an attitude of punch and not get hit back, your body is already set for whatever defensive maneuver that follows your attack. This is because your attitude is DEFENSE. If you want to hit a guy with a hard shot, you got to mean it. One of the greatest ways to feed into this would be to work on defense. If you have ever seen beginners spar or fight, most of the time the guy who is going out for blood could care less about defense as much as putting his fists through the guy. The one who is more defensive does not have the mentality to respond back with power because he is afraid of opening up and he is already getting overwhelmed. This leads me to my next tip 2.Defense Confidence in your defense means confidence in not getting cracked or touched. Have a defensive system at hand for when you want to go war, preferably BLOCKING and FOOTWORK. If you hit a guy hard, he may want to respond with his own power, and being able to pivot, block, step over and counter will prove more menacing then a guy who tries to use just blocking or just footwork or just headmovement. To me, personally, head movement is dangerous if you dont have blocking and footwork down because heavy punching requires commitment to follow up even when you know he will be swinging back. Head movement requires alot of anticipation and skill and the possibility of screwing up and taking a shot is immense, alot more than blocking. Walk the man down, use your jab ALWAYS and focus on sharp in and out footwork and great pivots to continue your assualt. 3.Punching is an art itself Everyone has their own theory of how to punch hard, thats cool. But if theres anything that you should remember, its that POWER IS ALWAYS AT THE END OF THE PUNCH, NOT THE BEGINNING OR MIDDLE. That means that you dont need tension to start it, you dont need to tense your arm while it is extended, you just need to harden your fist once you hit the target. Now, the tip to being able to hit him with power, is to feel heavy with every shot. You cant go and use concrete or trees as punching bags because they dont give. They arent soft and you cant punch through with the flesh and bones in your body, sorry. So think about yourself being a tree or a heavy rail connected to the ground that just grew arms and wanted to crack someone haha. Lower your hips and raise your rear heel. One tip is to go to a wall and push through it. Continue to push the wall harder and harder. Do you notice that you keep driving off the back foot more and more to increase pressure? Do you also notice that your hips lower more and more as you push it? Great. Now one other thing, when you begin the punch, imagine your body thrusting your arm out like a bullet, ABSOLUTELY NO RESISTANCE (that means dont flex or tense up). At the moment of impact, imagine becoming that tree or rail. Lower those hips, drive that rear heel and close your fist. 4. Calm before the storm Always think of punching like this. The beginning sequence of the punch is calm, when your arm is extending its still calm and once that fist lands, well holy sh*t things just got real. 5. Dont force power I was watching one of the gym's esteemed Cruiserweight Pro fighter hit pads and spar. He is undefeated and has 10 KO's out of 14 wins. I had noticed that he doesnt force that devastating cracking sound, it just happens. Ladies and Gents, if you dont have murderous KO power, live with it and work around it. Its ok, honestly, you wont knock EVERYBODY out and this tip was just for solid power technique, i have yet to add timing and precision into the equation. Really, this is just to batter your opponent. I have seen too many knockouts where a guy barely punches hard and knocks the opponent out just because he masked the shot so well. Knockouts can happen just by careful masking, hiding behind jabs, feints and so on and so fourth. I am more of heavy handed fighter more so than a KO puncher like JCChavez Sr, meaning my punches tend to have an accumulation effect more so than a one and your done type of power. * I hope this helps, if not, sorry. It helps me and i know how this stuff can kill a fighter mentally because they are always so focused on being a brutal hitter, the fastest puncher etc etc. I see alot of questions that i asked when i was just starting out and all i can say is to take your time.
"Punchers are born and not made" I think most people are thinking about concussive, one punch power when talking about this. And those guys are definitely born, not made. From the first time they put on a pair of gloves, it is obvious. That being said, definitely anyone can learn to punch harder. But you'll always be limited by you're neural capacity and connective tissue elasticity.
If the top 3 vertebrata are not naturally where they should be. Nothing works as it should. Balance is lost, so is Power.
You are just plain wrong, punchers are born, everyone whose been in boxing says so, cus d'amato who seen boxers going back to the 30s and trained guys from floyd patterson to mike tyson. Teddy Atlas says so, Freddie Roach says so. If punchers are made show me the trainer of earnie Shavers turning out 10 earnie shaver punchers. Dr Charlie Simpson, a senior lecturer in Exercise and Sports Science at Oxford Brookes University. http news boxrec com /news/2011/are-punchers-born-or-made People with more experience say you are wrong, science says your wrong, professor at oxford says your, dude you are wrong. To punch hard you need to already be born with a high amount of fast twitch muscle fiber and according to the professor and science this cannot change much through training or exercise. Why because building this type of muscle is extraordinarily difficult. Rather than telling newbies myths, you should say something useful. Like can't punch hard, learn to swarm or stick and move. Just about everything you said was wrong, I don't know where to start other than say do not listen to you because you know nothing. :good
Wow, so much anger. If you want to be taken seriously, then back up your argument in an intelligent way. It doesn't lend much credibility to just say X person said it cuz there are just as many "experts" that would say the opposite. At least Blackwolf supports his opinion in intelligent manner. The truth is, it's probably not as black and white. Punchers can be born, AND made. You've heard of one armed punchers, who learned how to have power in BOTH hands later in their pro career right? There are a few examples, i.e. Pacquiao. But according to your logic, he should never have wasted his time because his right was shot from day one?!?!? Again, not so black and white. There are people who SHOULD be able to punch hard, but never develop the technique to use the power. And people who are weak punchers who learn to eventually develop power. One of the posters on this forum asked "how does an orthodox fighter develop more power in their left hand?" and your reply was basically, there's no point - it can't be done - punchers are born". WTF?!?! That's BS....many people (including myself and other folks right in this forum) have done it. Again, your simplistic logic and strong language (basically saying people with an opposing view "know nothing") is kinda making you out to look more & more like a clown.
I have said this quite a few times on numerous threads. Natural abilities you are born with, teaching someone naturally gifted to being athletic will more likely be a stronger / better puncher.
atsch You are dumber than the OP because you had the benefit of reading the scientific evidence that I posted from doctors explaining why punchers are born. Blackwolf provided no sources, I provided numerous, either you read 1 line of my post and decided to write a big reply or cannot read. Punchers cannot be made Dr Charlie Simpson, a senior lecturer in Exercise and Sports Science at Oxford Brookes University I'll take the oxford professor over the clown. You cannot develop more power in your hand of significance, it is entirely genetic, do you think Mike Tyson asked how do I develop power in my left hand? Punchers struggle is actually the 2nd part described by the doctor, they can beat a bag to death but have trouble landing it at the right time on a moving opponent. But that is not more power, its landing power.
Punchers are definitely born, but people who have good technique and good balance can also punch hard as well, their power is just limited on what they natually have. e.g. Timothy Bradley, people call him featherfisted but because he has good technique and positioning his punches are strong enough to keep guys honest. However because hes not a born puncher he wont have that knockout power
Punchers are made and born, but many born punchers are not effective punchers because attitude is the most important part. Attitude is everything when it comes to punching power. You really do have to like to hit and think destructive, malicious thoughts. Some guys are just naturally heavy handed due to their punching mechanics, and those guys are the ones who are real knockout punchers when they have a puncher's attitude, but anyone can be a damaging puncher if they learn to punch right and develop the attitude.
