^ Without a doubt, he also called out and stepped up to Triple G, so respect for that. Stevens did what fighters should do if they can't get big fights - stay active and absolutely trash the 2nd and 3rd tier opposition on TV, it creates buzz. I don't understand Rigo and Ward, who in between big fights could just take tune ups and display dazzling skills in taking out inferior opposition and keep the buzz interesting/going. Staying inactive is the WORST thing for a fighter to do. GGG and Stevens both have the right idea for building their fanbase.
Look, you can keep bragging about fighters ducking GG, and he will just keep getting older and older. He's 31 now, and look at his resume.
I saw the interview. Another gross exaggeration. Quillin never said anythng close to that he is scared of GG and that he will duck him.
Agreed. Considering the entire concept of prize fighting is that you have to fight to get the prize, the solution to making more money in boxing is rarely "fight less". Guys like Rigo, Ward, and a boatload of other inactive titlists would be better served capitalizing on their titles while they can. The best of them are building name value while winning; and for the lesser titlists, a few b-level defenses will still make them money and keep their name in the press while they wait for a bigger cashout fight.
Ward's problem is he's asking for too much money for a tune up fight. Rigo's problem is ARum and HBO hate him
Stevens is absolutely no threat to GGG. He gets knocked out early. He shits his pants on the way to the ring.
I don't think anybody at MW is absolutely unwilling to face Golovkin, but this is their livelihood/income. GGG represents a high risk/low reward. If the current going price to get punched in the face by GGG is 300,000 to 400,000 and a year from it's likely to be 500,000 to 1,000,000, why would any of these top MW's step in right now? A year from now, Quillin, Barker, Geale, Murray, Martinez, Rubio, and maybe even Sturm will all be willing to get some GGG just like guys at WW are waiting for their turn at the Mayweather sweepstakes. You didn't see guys willing to face Chris Byrd, and he couldn't crack an egg. For now Golovkin has to settle for guys who earn squat and who's short term career prospects look bleak to mediocre - Stevens, Mora, Soliman, Vera. Macklin took the fight because he was guaranteed atleast another HBO date. N'Dam's willing to take $300k now, but once he's signed with another promoter and gets another couple wins I bet it takes a lot more.
:deal Some real idiots exposing themselves in this thread Golovkin may or may not be the unstoppable punching machine he's being hyped to be, one things for sure tho not a damn soul at 160 wants to fight him. Gotta give it up to Stevens for taking the fight but he definitely ain't a step up from Macklin.
