We don't know him, otherwise he will not be on Prime TV atsch All the commentators mentioned are great, the fighters who fill in for commentators are obviously not as good, because its not what they do.
1. larry merchant 2. jim lampley 3. mauro ranallo (i didn't know this guys name until i read this thread) these 3 should NEVER do a boxing telecast ever again.
Larry Merchant is the greatets commentator of all time, at his age he has the quickest mind, even when he is clearly drunk
he's waaaaay too negative for my liking. he's also very biased against skilled boxers. he prefers the gatti like fighters and that's all find and dandy for fans who appreciate that sort of mindless face first fighting...but for people who love boxing...it's history....and the science....he's horrible. i hear ppl say all the time that "this guy knows boxing blah,blah,blah..." and i believe that if guys like ray robinson or willie pep were around today, he'd **** on them. i watch old fights all the time and he wasn't always this bad. somewhere along the way he became jaded and bitter....and just plain old grumpy. i love boxing!!! and when i watch the sport, i don't want to hear some guy ***** and moan about what's on the screen. never understood why hbo kept him on so long. the combination of him, lampley and steward (rip) sounded like the cast of grumpy old men to me. i liked steward when he wasn't opposite merchant because then he gave his true opinion and didn't have to back track because what he was saying was going against jim or larry. hbo in general has been horrible for years. i noticed it most around the time of delahoya/trinidad...and it all just seemed to go down hill from there. lampley's show is horrible. his opinion is ****. i used to like kellerman but the more i listen to him...he's trying to do a larry merchant impersonation and it's just plain horrible. more than anything, it's larry's pompous attitude and condescending way of interviewing fighters who aren't as articulate or quick enough with wit to respond appropriately. it's his lack of understanding and respect for the sport...and it's participants who put their lives on the line for our entertainment. i tune in to see the boxer do their thing...not to listen to larry merchant try to wax poetic or try to have his ernest hemmingway moment on the mic.
Why would you give him a pass? His saying " He's got tee wurk harrderr " repetitively in that fvcking annoying Jock nasal voice is the most irritating sound in the history of sports commentary.
Max Kellerman is, by far, the worst commentator I have seen in 35 years of following boxing. Unlike qualified commentators like Larry Merchant, Steve Farhood or Al Bernstein, he never worked as a boxing journalist prior to getting handed a job at ESPN. Nor did he have any in-ring experience as a participant or trainer, like say, Emmanuel Steward or Roy Jones. No, Kellerman is some punk, plucked from cable access obscurity for no reason other than his wealthy family knew Bill Cayton, who sacked the great Al Bernstein at ESPN to put this unqualified twerp on the air. To be a good boxing commentator requires seasoning, and paying dues in the trenches, something this punk will never have. He should go back to making no-talent rap videos, and talking **** on cable access, It's exactly where he belongs.
One of the showtime guys. Idk his name Showtime needs to steal Max Jim and Michael Buffer. I actually like Max
