I think Alvarez has a chance to earn legions of fans, but Mayweather doesn't have a glass jaw and remains the very gifted in terms of speed, reflexes quickness, defense and accuracy of punches. Can he catch up to him and win exchanges? Floyd does have some issue with pressure fighters, and can be backed up to the ropes. It is here where Alvarez, who has a nice body attack can start chopping away for a chance at an attrition based TKO upset. Best guess: I see a 8-4 type of score card with Mayweather wining a clean, but sometimes hard fought match, and once again silencing his critics.
Mayweather's legs aren't what they used to be, but after he rehired his dad for the guerrero fight his defense was back in tip top shape. Canelo is big and strong, but Mayweather's ring iq, defense, experience, speed, punch rep, timing etc too much for Canelo. Unless Mayweather gets old overnight and koed with a liver shot I also predictMayweather by 116 to 112. I felt Mayweather could have stopped Cotto in the 12th but chose not to, this time around he will stop Canelo if he can.
I'm no Mayweather fan, but Floyd is a stratosphere above Canelo, He'll do a number on him big time & for once I recken he'll go for the stoppage around 8 onwards. He'll maneuver & counter Canelo to death, set the pace of the fight from around the 3 round & it'll be another Hatton job, as soon as Canelo sets himself, Floyd will step in, tie him up ect ect. Castillo showed the way to manage Floyd, but for me Canelo just dos'nt have any fluidity of movement to employ educated pressure nor the required jab, which is an absolute must have if you are going to be able to set up any effective attacks. This fight for me is going to be an absolute clinic & eventual stoppage by Mayweather. Canelo is gonna look like his a lost lamb in a boxing wilderness, just does not have the required speed and fundamentals to lock Floyd into his target zone...pity!
Mayweather made the fight because Canelo is a kid with a big fan base who hasn't truly established himself on the lite level. He's unprepared and too inexperienced at the top for the level of game Mayweather is going to on fight night. Mayweather knows it too, just like he could read how Victor Ortiz was briefly a hot property after the Berto win, but wold not be able to deal with him. Although now that I've spent weeks saying as much, there'll probably be some strange occurrence on 9/14 or Canelo will somehow pull it off.
Canelo fought 1 guy out of the top 10 (at 154) and he lost that fight on my scorecard. He is talented though and bigger than Floyd physically. Mayweather by decision?
Canelo is the natural light middleweight between the two of them, that's the only advantage he has against Floyd. Young and unexperienced, I don't think this will be a tough fight at all for Mayweather. However, can't say that I'll be surprised if things get blown out of proportions and people will make it look closer, therefore making it to seem a significant and impressive win on Floyd's resume. There's really no one I can think of that Floyd could fight, not even Manny, that would help his case in becoming an ATG.
I think this will be a very tactical, closely contested, and potentially controversial fight after the scorecards are read.
Since the initial excitement Canelo has been a little overlooked. Admittedly the catch-weight gives the event an ugly tinge, but providing Canelo comes in healthy and strong we should expect a helluva lot more out of him than what Guerrero managed. Trout is a better warm-up for Mayweather than Guerrero is for Canelo. Mayweather will probably win, but expect a bumpy ride. If it warrants a rematch it would be great for boxing.
Alvarez has a chance to become the golden boy if he beats Mayweather. He's a Mexican with red Hair, and as others pointed out looks Irish. A bit of a promoters dream.
This has Sugar Ray vs Norris or Camacho written all over it. Overall Mayweather is the greater boxer, but he's old and ripe to be taken out by top young talent.
Canelo's the first guy in a long time that I think has a serious shot. If forced to pick, I'd take Floyd of course, just because history suggests he has a bit of a tendency to win, but I'm really not all that confident in that. He's got more dimensions to his game than the usual Mayweather fair and is the biggest opponent yet. Should be interesting. At this age and stage of his career, Floyd should get tons of credit for a win in this one. Canelo doesn't seem special, but he is damn good.
