He deserves it. He died much too young, had heart, will to win, underrated height, reach (although he did not use them very often), some good pop in his punches, etc. And his classic with Jose Luis Castillo makes him, to me at least, a future hall of famer.
R.I.P Chico... Even though, you were not the best human being... You deserved better...

he was a blood and guts warrior, and super popular.

but had ONLY 7 title fight victories

and was on his way out at age 29 with 3 losses in a row before his death

    great guy, hardly HOF worthy....

I don't fully agree with Max jittery comment that Chico fought the greatest fight of all time vs Castillo, but its a candidate :good

Gatti, Valero & Corrales go to the HOF ahead of many fighters, who were more skilled mainly cause of the way they touched boxing fans in their lives & death

Its not like the HOF matters these days, you can always do a Youtube search and see why they are who they are :yep

The idea of HOF is to immortalize the famous boxers of the current era. Corrales was very famous & at one point his highlights reached outside of boxing.

    Its not an ATG chart

    No it isn't :huh

It is to honor and preserve boxing's rich heritage, and to chronicle the achievements of those who excelled.

Hall of "Fame" is a misnomer. Fame is not specified anywhere as a consideration for induction, and fighters are supposed to be judged solely by their achievements in the ring as a professional.

"Hall of Fame" is just a name given to a type of place that recognises noteworthy individuals in a particular field, and the modern meaning of fame is slightly different from when the name was first conceived. There wasn't and isn't supposed to be any notion of recognising more well-known and popular individuals at the expense of more successful ones. It's a common misconception.

Corrales has an argument for the HOF based on achievements. However, it's far from a lock. There are less successful fighters in the HOF, but what people who use that argument often overlook is that there are better and more successful fighters who haven't been inducted.

I think it's likely that Chico will be inducted, probably in the next few years when first ballot types like Oscar and Tito have already been inducted. Even if he misses out for a while, he'll have a stronger claim if and when Castillo gets in.

Every bit as exciting as HOF'er Gatti with a better resumé, significantly better i would say, who could they keep him out?

Fair point when you look at it that way.

However, Chico isn't competing against the fighters who (rightly or wrongly) have already been inducted. He is competing against fighters eligible for induction who aren't in the HOF.

From fighters already on the ballot, there are several fighters like Curry, Gushiken, Hamed, Herrera, Kingpetch, Marcel, Michalczewski, Ohba, Vazquez Sr and Zapata who have better resumés than Corrales. There are also fighters not on the ballot like Booker and DeJesus who were at least a league (if not more) above Chico. The "Corrales was exciting" argument loses a bit of credibility when Julian Jackson isn't even on the ballot.

There are also some big name fighters who will soon be eligible who need to be factored in.

If you are using Gatti as the measuring stick, you can make an argument for virtually any fighter who held an alphabet title for a reasonable length of time. Corrales went 5-5 against world titlists, with no victories against HOF fighters (although Castillo has a good shout down the line). It's a good resume that puts him in with a decent shout, but there's nothing that screams out that he has to be inducted.

There is no way you can put Gatti and the word 'bum' in the same sentence.
