Did Gerald McClellan have brain trauma before the Benn fight?

He had no defense and ate some big shots from the hardest p4p hitter ever, Julian the Hawk Jackson. When he met another big bomber, Nigel Benn, that's when the disaster hit.

 

The amount of damage he took in his career was limited to two fights - he destroyed everybody else. A lot of big punchers retire just fine because there are few protracted beat downs. He probably had a tendency to hemorrhage, but Benn is also just a murderous puncher who was rabbit punching a whole lot. That fight was the primary cause.

Head butt.. it didn't hardly connect, that was more McClellan sensing he was going to get beat and looking for away out.

He bought golden retrievers from kennel, duct taped their mouths and timed how long it took from his pitbull to kill them.
He was proud about it.

 

I think julian jackson started it, and benn made the trauma worse. Yeah he beat jackson but jackson landed some nukes in both their fights.

 

It MUST have been accumulation. I just can't see how he could have been fine with sparring HWs and two fight with Julian Jackson, was blinking in training from single jabs then suddenly a genetic predisposition shows up against Benn. I think it was the combo of weight draining and taking alot of hard shots. I think he is a case of where having a good chin actually hurt him in the end.
As a side not, on my first viewing of that fight I thought Benn should have been counted out in the 1st but on 2nd viewing he is clearly standing under his power on 6 and he ducked under the 2ND rope instead of the 1st. I think he would have fallen over getting down that low if he wasn't OK to continue. I think you can see the hands pushing him in the British telecast. It's understandable, they put their hands up to stop him from falling off the apron then probably just kept going.
Man that first round was WILD, I can understand the ref getting between them a couple of times like he did. McClellan just wouldn't back off and go to the neutral corner in eagerness to jump on Benn and Benn was swinging for the fences and falling into McClennan.

 

He was a bad ******* who got what he deserved.

Benn showed the yanks who the boss was I was proud of him.

No one helped Benn back into the ring.

It was a beatdown from a better warrior with a bigger punch and more heart.

If Benn had fought him at MW he would have done him within five rounds.

Unfortunately, McClellan was an angry, violent man to an extent well beyond most other boxers. That kind of life philosophy almost always leads to those kinds of consequence. It just so happens it was in a boxing ring. Gerald's legitimate goal was to kill Benn in that fight, and he pursued that goal with a zealot's fervor. The aftermath was brutal, and I truly feel for Gerald's sister in this...but the scary truth is that, as Gerald became more and more unhinged, the better the odds would've been that other humans began to pay the price instead of dozens and dozens of animals.

 

As for the damage, gym wars and Julian Jackson should've led McClellan to retire before the fight because the signs were already there that something wasn't right. And if Nigel Benn had anything, it was a punch.

King knew there was still money to be made, though. He didn't view McClellan as a skilled boxer who might stick around for 10 years at a high level; he viewed him as the perfect opportunity to cash in on the public's undying love for aggressive KO artists. Don matched him accordingly, making certain he'd always match Gerald up with guys who'd had a history of being knocked out and were quite hittable. He avoided matching Gerald up with durable and skilled/slick fighters to keep the hype train rolling with as little resistance as possible, and Nigel Benn was thought to be just another brick in the wall- a fighter who'd been KO'd a few times and was easy to hit, but brought a title to the table as well as a heck of a live gate.

 

Like I said he was a bad bad person and he got what he deserved.

Benn was a beast that night and would have gave anyone a fight, If Benn had fought him at MW he would have done him within five rounds.

McClellan never beat good young ontop fighters, Jackson was at the tail end and in all truth really a LMW NOT a middleweight and all the rest were old or bums.

Typical bullyboy front runner. THAT SAID (If he caught them) I think he could have koed anyone within 3 rounds such was his power.

I have no wish to educate any of you further but for conclusive proof "Jullian hit me me with some huge shots I have a tremendous headache" (G-Man staight after 1st Jackson fight) ..I remember thinking at the time "what an odd thing to say"
