Ward before s6 final : "the winner MUST fight Bute right after the final"
    .
    .
    .
    .
2 weeks later : " Who? Bute must prove himself, he doesn't deserve a shot, i'd rather fight a drunk or a mummy instead"

and at the end of the day, that nobody still earns more than the accomplished Warddke:rofl. Warddke still needs a lot of defends to equal Bute, who was a longer champ than Warddke and had more defends

Hagler was avoided like the plague in his early career. Wasn't it Frazier that said he 'was too good, too black and a southpaw' sorry if I've made that last bit up

yeah man i 2nd that. literally they have to find tough, warrior bums from the streets with nothing to lose. seriously, wilder is the most avoided fighter ever, klitschkos are scared, so is haye and all the rest. wilder is the reincarnation of tyson and black jesus combined.

I think you've got to separate Modern fighters from Colour Bar fighters and the Murderer's Row. The latter two groups were operating in an environment completely alien to fighters from the 60s onwards. Taking Lloyd Marshall for example, he beat 6 world champions (including 4 Hall of Famers), but never fought for a geniune world title. That scenario couldn't possibly exist today.

Hagler is the first example I thought of in the Modern era, as he was clearly the best middleweight in the world following Monzon's retirement, but didn't get a title shot for two years.

Liston was avoided for years by Patterson (or D'Amato to be more accurate).

McCallum is another one who missed out on matches with the Fab 4. A win over Hearns or Leonard in the late 80s would have cemented his legacy.

Truly "avoided" fighters are very rare these days. As long as they remain active, are willing to travel and flexible on negotiations, sooner or later the cream will rise to the top.
