Oh my ! Friday nights before the fights at MSG, eating deli at Grants on E42st, or going to the Garden cafeteria across the street from the old MSG. Going into the main lobby on 8th Ave, passing the life size bronze sculpture of Joe Gans in his fighting pose. Usually sitting [when lucky] over the clock in the side balcony, and waiting for the first preliminary bout...Johnny Addie announcing the prelim fighters, then seeing a couple 4 and 6 round bouts, then the semi-final bout, and then the main event. Johnny Addie would introduce ex champions like Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Canzoneri, Barney Ross and each would get a great ovation..I, a youngster would be thrilled to see up and coming fighters who were fighting the next few weeks being introduced especially since I would see them train as Stillman's gym on Saturday's... Then the main event...Fighters wearing black or white boxing trunks, being introduced and seeing great boxers of the 1940s as Robinson, Gavilan, willie Pep, Ike Williams, Rocky Graziano, my favorite action fighter Beau Jack who sold out MSG 7 times in 1 year, and Billy Graham, Sandy Saddler etc...Then after the bouts having coffee with my dad at the Garden Cafeteria, sitting near tables with the fighters we saw, that night and their managers...How I long for those wonderful days...
