Over 15 Monzon stops Leonard . Leonard knew that even shot Hagler was 2 much 4 him over 15 and dis iz Y hi required 12 . Over 12 prime Monzon will b better than shot Hagler so hi wins iven den .
He'd land it,...he'd land it, much to the amazement and incongruity of all the boxing "experts". I know that This would be a near-distance fight in which the taller, bigger, stronger Monzon would win against a more naturally talented man. All of SRL's gifts would be nullified by the unreal patience, presence and control of Monzon. He could deal with any style an opponent could put up against him. A late dominance, capped off with a couple of kds and the fighti s stopped in round 14. Monzon's cold, reptilian (unlike any Latin fighter ever) ring generalship would win this fight. He wouldn't be a tight, confused at times bundle of frustration like Hagler was. He would simply wear Leonard down in those legendary championship rounds.
My issue with this is that he never fought a great or near great in his prime. Which of his opponents can remotely be comapared to Leonard? I'm hard pressed.
This is also a real possibility. To quote Gil Clancy: "His hands are so accurate." He might just flat-out find a way. No trick, just great timing.
haha, great line. I agree with your assessment as well. Of course all this assumes Leonard would fight Monzon. I'm not so sure about that.
I don't see this fight going well for Leonard, especially the version that fought at 160 and above. He had troubles with the reach and jab of hearns. While I will concede that Hearns is faster, I think that Monzon is smarter and had a harder jab. Also, while hearns had the greater one punch sometimes power, punch for punch over the course of a fight, Monzon hit harder. When leonard did get close, he ain't hurting monzon. Over 15 I think monzon beats him up real good- stiff jabs, thudding right hands, good body punches. Ray leonard was nobody's idea of a defensive wizard; he made a living being fast. A smart guy that could keep him at range and withstand the times when he got close will beat him. Monzon stops him. 12-15 late
Well, I can still see a past his prime and slowed down Emile landing enough lead right hands on Carlos to make their second go close. Emile wasn't tagged or hurt in either bout though much more stationary then Ray would have been (the stoppage in their first go was from Emile's legs cramping up and he couldn't move).
The only real quality that Monzon had was his ability to control distance. Everything else about the guy was mediocre and he benefited from fighting in the same sort of mediocre era of middleweights that Hagler flourished in. And like Hagler, his arsehole twitched at the mere mention of ever having to fight a light-heavyweight.
Monzon would wear down Leonard as the fights progresses and wins a lopsided unanimous decision over 15.Ray wouldn't be able to get into Carlos' head as he did Marvin Hagler.
We actually have people in here attempting to argue Monzon's pawing jab was better than Hearns'.atsch
