The relevance of my post is to debunk the skinny legs theory going around. Seth has some major power in his legs, he just happens to have a weak punch resistence, PERIOD. Nothing he can do to make it better, I would think... which is unfortunate for him.
Which is exactly my point. He does not have skinny legs, his legs are strong, he is overall very strong. He just happens to be one of those guys who can't take a punch, and that's all there is to it.
I am in a boxing gym 5 out of 7 days a week. That is a Fact. This is the silliest argument on here. Glass Jaws exist. We WILL discuss them on ESB they are an attribute. I don't care that you can't or don't understand that. It is impossible to have a Boxing Forum and not talk Chins. It isn't 'disrespectful' either. No different than saying a fighter has no power. Many times a fight comes down to who has the better Chin. Do you understand this?
There are people who look like they could withstand a punch, and they can't. Chins are intangibles, some guys can take it whilst others cant. Boxing is a very tough sport, thats why we love it.
Seth's football background definitely plays a part in it. That's not saying he'd be Chuvalo if he never stepped on the gridiron, but after having had firsthand experience playing football and researching CTE and head trauma after injuries ended my playing days, I can guarentee you he's had at least 20 concussions by the time he got through playing big time conference D1 football. You can't play linebacker at a high level without sustaining them, it's just part of the territory. That doesn't mean they were all severe- that's a misconception that all concussions are highlight-reel worthy. There is also a lot of sub-concussive head trauma that happens day in, day out as just part of the job. Seth may be new to boxing, but he's had plenty of head trauma from football. If you honestly believe that plays no role in his ability to take a punch now, be my guest.
I think its a combination of things. He is too top heavy like larry olabimiwo. He has not had enough experience in sparring and training growing up, so isnt conditioned to getting hit. He panics when he does get hit and starts flopping around as a result. A lot of absorbing a shot is also a strong mental capacity..
He has a glass jaw because he hasn't been getting punched in the face his entire life like most other boxers. And the bums he was facing until recently haven't hit him much and he just felt the first real heavyweight punch of his life. Knowing how to take a punch of and react to it is a skill up to a point and Mitchell knows nothing about it.
It's clear that the the guy doesn't have a good chin and glass chins do exist however like others have mentioned, there are many more factors as to why Seth hasn't succeeded. You can tell the guy got a late start in the ring. The ability to prepare for and take a punch is a skill in itself. The guy got hit cleanly with the first shot Arreola threw with any conviction. His leaky defence coupled with a poor chin are essentially a death sentence. You can be missing one of these qualities and go some distance but not both. The guy is also very tentative and doesn't look very natural in the ring regarding his footwork and judging of distance. I truly wish Seth the best. He seems like a genuinely decent and humble guy. The loss clearly hurt him as seen in the post-fight interview. I don't see how he can come back from this. He's got a lot to learn at the age of 31 but good luck to him.
I wouldn't discount that theory to be honest with you, and I was wondering that too. Its just weird that he would be that fragile. Whos to say how many times he played with concussions, ect, ect.... that wound up ruining would have been an otherwise average chin. Who knows, but I def don't count that out whatsoever. On the other hand, its also possible the guy just has a bad chin, regardless. But one things for sure, having a life time of playing football at the position he played it will hurt your punch resistance. As you say, it would be nice to see him go into another line of work, and be successful. I was rooting for him as a fighter but he would be doing himself a major favor if he came to peace with what hes achieved so far, and also be honest with himself though in that hes gone about as far as he can. I wish Seth nothing but the best.
Of course he does. Yet that bs theory is trotted out often by some on here :nono And for obvious bs reasons :|
Fantastic in-depth rebuttal. The dozens of articles, numerous books, and firsthand experience I have can't possible compare with it. "Just NO". Brilliant. I think it's really the capitalization of "NO" that makes it irrefutable.
