Exception in what? Competition? It was mediocre at best. Skills? Offensively he was great, but defensively he wasn't that good, as was proved by multiple knockdowns he had suffered.

Quantity has a quality all it's own. And Louis beat vastly more ranked fighters than all but a few fighters at any weight. For all his defensive limitations he was stopped once in his prime and was one of the greatest offensive forces in history.

Unbelievable. Louis was one of the most talented boxers ever to live. Greatest offense fantastic defense. Watch his bouts with Max Baer and Galento to see his boxing skills...side stepping, countering, blocking, parrying, text book stuff.

At heavyweight division they may have been ranked, but they'd be tomato cans in lowers divisions, most of them, skill and cleverness wise.

I have to watch him against Baer and Galento? Then you'll have to watch Mayweather vs Corrales (who was better than either).

Don't you think that those extra 50 lbs or more make a huge difference?

There is also more to boxing than skill and cleverness.

Anyway Mayweather is an all time great himself and the idea that he can be dismissed versus anybody is ridiculous.

What extra 50 lbs or more are you talking about?

The heavyweight talent pool has been bad at all times, you'd have a couple of really good men at the top and the rest is mediocrity or worse.

Maybe it's because heavyweights are heavyweights.
They fight like heavyweights. Some attributes than may not be as important for lighter men are greater strengths for heavyweights, and vice versa.

Joe Louis himself has tremendous skills, offensive and defensive. Some old-timers noted that he was almost a carbon copy of his lightweight mentor Blackburn, scaled up to heavyweight to devastating effected. The truth of which I don't know.

Jack Blackburn was more cautious, and actually wasn't good at finishing an opponent who was hurt, missing a lot of opportunities.

I´m big on Louis......but you have to agree that Galento and Baer were terribly unskilled. I know, I know, Baer could punch a lot, Galento too (overrated power though), but I´m just saying.....

That's basically the difference in weight between a heavyweight and a smaller guy like Floyd. Of course they don't look as sharp and as fluid in moves, but there have been plenty of skillful fighters in heavyweight division.

This is not close. Joe Louis by a landslide. Floyd probably wouldn't have even been champion back then.

Joe Louis was UNDISPUTED HW champion for 20+ defenses whereas Floyd was undisputed in nothing
