Mayweather's Chin: Solid So Far, But Could Cracks Be Showing?

Chins do sometimes get worse as a fighter ages. Look at Ray Mercer. His chin was iron for most of his career. Then, as he got into the later stages of his career, he started hitting the deck.

 

Well he's never been knocked down and has taken some flush shots from some pretty hard hitters from 130-154 (the KD Carlos was credited for doesn't count, he intentionally put his hand on the canvas after hurting it.)

I'd say there was a "crack" in his fight game after the Cotto fight, it seemed like he wanted to present the fans with a more fan-friendly style and stay in the pocket and brawl much more than he did since the DLH fight. But since he got back with his father and that masterclass performance against The Ghost, I just don't see too many flaws or "cracks" in his game. His handspeed and footspeed look eerily similar to how he was in his mid to late 20's. If he didn't hurt his hand in the 8th round or so, I think he would've picked up the pressure a bit and went for the KO.

Well didn't seem bothered by anything Cotto did, I'm not sure if Canelo can be the one to put his 36 year old chin to test. but we will see.

 

If Canelo successfully cuts off the ring and forces Floyd to fight in the pocket, would it be because Floyd decided to give the fans a fan-friendly style? Or did he only want to do that for Cotto and Hatton?

 

Cotto doesn't really hurt anyone. He only sometimes did when he was at 140lb, but hasnt hurt a soul in 147lb for as much as I can recall. Canelo regularly hurts a lot of people at 154lb. Big difference in power. Power unquestionably has the potential to help him against Floyd but will he land anything too clean on the head? Maybe, he will but i wont be surprised if he doesnt.

It's becoming on of those myths in boxing that people repeat ad nauseum, "Floyd fought for the fans against Cotto!" is the new "Leonard lost to Duran because he fought his fight"

 

A 36 year old can be hurt (especially guys not fighting in the big weight divisions), if Floyd is ever going to lose i think its by stoppage from a younger fighter like Canelo. I've got Floyd winning a UD but Canelo forcing a stoppage is possible.

This wouldn't mean for sure that Floyd has a glass chin, its just means at 36 years old he made the wrong decision fighting a legit JMW who is 23 years old.

Floyd fights to win and whatever style makes that possible is what he will adopt.

 

While I enjoy watching canelo fight, he's not the type of guy to cut off the ring on anyone. That would imply he's a pressure, forward-first type of fighter which he isn't. He has good handspeed and good combination punching ability, but he doesn't have good footwork to put it nicely. If you think a guy that's going to be 20 pounds heavier than Floyd will cut off the ring against him, well that's wishful thinking at its finest.

This fight could look a lot like the Baldomir fight who also came in to fight night around 170 lbs, attempted to cut off the ring on FLoyd and got utterly dismantled in their WW unification fight.

I don't know what Canelo's tactic should be against FLoyd but him trying to run around the ring and trying to cut him off would be one of the worst tactics he could employ.

 

That doesn't matter if you have a glass jaw, if you have a glassed jaw, Cotto should be able to rock you.
