Why do so many people think Sergio Martinez isn't worthy of a fight vs. Mayweather?

I've heard people say Martinez is past prime, I've even heard he is washed up. Why do people think this?

Yes, he is 38 and will be 39 in 5 months.

Yes, he has been knocked down in each of his last 3 fights.

So what? He was also down vs. Paul Williams almost 3 years ago. He gets knocked down sometimes, and he gets up and wins... except for once back in 2000 vs. Antonio Magarito, LKOby7 at WW. Martinez got much better after this fight plus Margarito may have been cheating anyway.

Martinez has done very well over the last 5 years. During this time he has gone 8-1-1 (6) and won World Titles at 154 and 160 Lbs. The loss was a close decision that could have went either way, LMD12 to Paul Williams. He fought Williams again and stopped him in the 2nd round. The draw was vs. Kermit Cintron, D12... I thought Martinez clearly won this fight.

He also beat Alex Bunema KO8, Kelly Pavlik W12, Serhiy Dzinziruk KO8, Darren Barker KO11, Matthew Macklin KO11, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. W12, and Martin Murray W12.

I think he should be Floyd Mayweather's next opponent, 157 Lbs. That is all for now.

    Thoughts...

Floyd is a Natural Welterweight and Sergio a Natural Middleweight (as best I can tell). Both are great fighters. But...it's my opinion that they are just a bit too far off in weight to make such a matchup meaningfull at about any catchweight.

Because he is past his best and is in an overrated division.

if he wants to fight the champ he needs to come down the weight
floyd doesnt need to fight everyone from lightweight to middleweight to prove a point
153 is the max he should fight out
after the fight he said he weighed 147 the fight day so why does he need to give away so much?????

The division is not overrated. And it is going to get better and better.

Martinez is used goods, Besides HBO/Showtime this fight is a virtual impossibility.
(I'd favor Mayweather tho & I always have)

Canelo would beat Martinez as is now IMO.

If this was 2 years ago, maybe Martinez had a shot. But he had to many knee injuries and at his age and style that is not a good thing.

    Because Sergio is a MIDDLEweight.

And most people scored his last fight against him. Murray was no consensus top 10 MW entering the fight so that is not good. Mayweather hasn't fought anyone coming off a bad performance in quite some years.
