Well…I’d start with footwork basics – the very simple stuff. #1 A great candidate to beat FMJ would have grade A footwork. He doesn’t have to be naturally fast on his feat, but he must be explosive. He must be able to cover half a ring in the wink of an eye. He must be able to move forwards, backwards and sideways with quickness and ease while being able to maintain balance and stop and set on a dime. He would remind you of Sergio Martinez. It doesn’t take a great athlete to develop this level of footwork – I’ve seen Grade B Fencers move as fast – and faster. So I am amazed when I don’t see more of it. In fact, other than Sergio, I can’t remember seeing any of it in Boxing. The closest I’ve seen is Manny Pacquiao – who is able to burst forward at a rate that is impressive even when compared to Sergio. A guy who had this kind of basic footwork can use it well for defense and offense.
the fighter to beat Floyd would be a hybrid of a Pacquiao/JMM type of fighter...he has to be smart above all. Punch in volume but can counter effectively. and even then it'll be a tough go.
the thing is this. everyone paid too much attention to the castillo blueprint (ex hatton). many have tried the all pressure , relentless and physical style and has failed some have tried the de la hoya blueprint (cotto) work behind the jab, trap and unload in the corner but it has failed too We need to see the Judah formula again, but from someone who doesn't fade late. we need hand and foot speed, counter punching ability, a jab, stamina and high ring iq easier said than done right? Or a perfect punch like mosley did
Theres plenty of fighters at welter from the last two decades I would have given a great shot at beating Floyd.
The fact that this debate is going on says it all really. There is no blueprint. I now heard after the post fight press conference Hopkins is offering to drop down to 160 pounds to take on Mayweather. Why does a guy who is really 140 pound fighter who started at 130 pounds need to move up to 160 pounds to fight guys who will rehydrated up to Light heavyweight and Cruiserweight by fight night.
He looks like Chuck Norris, hairy chest and all. I'm not paying for another PPV until I see someone that resembles Chuck Norris. I always back Floyd. It's a curse ALWAYS being right. Floyd needs to face Chuck Norris, maybe then I will know what it's like to be a fan of all of Floyd's opposition. I'm convinced only Chuck Norris can bring balance back to boxing.
You must have ONE punch KO. You must be able to throw that ONE punch KO power for 12 rounds and lots of it. Great chin to withstand of the sharp counters Thick skinned. Don't mind looking dumb while Floyd embrasses you and makes you miss. Boxing IQ to throw some shots that might land. Basically Size, Strength, Power, Speed, IQ.
