Someone posted this article on another forum. 'It's no secret that Gennady Golovkin has the goods to be a huge star in boxing. He has the punching power that is eerily reminiscent of Rocky IV's Ivan Drago minus the bad attitude and Brigitte Nielson by his side. The fighter from Kazakhstan also possesses a very likable personality that, coupled with his crippling power, could give him massive crossover appeal. The only thing holding him back is the lack of willing competition. And if the middleweights were fearful of stepping between the ropes with Golovkin before, his wicked devastation of Matthew Macklin certainly sealed the deal. But what about the other divisions where bigger names dwell? Golovkin has said in the past that he is willing to fight anyone from the junior middleweight to super middleweight. The questions is, who in those weight classes is willing to fight him? As of right now, the list of fighters shrink with each devastating knockout. But if Golovkin's warpath continues, the big names in the sport will have no choice but to fight him. And if Golovkin and trainer Abel Sanchez have their way, that means a showdown with the likes of Floyd Mayweather or Saul "Canelo" Alvarez could be in their future. In a recent interview with LifeandTimes.com, Sanchez explained the simplicity of Golovkin descending a weight class in the event that an opportunity to face the likes of Canelo or Mayweather opened up. "If Canelo or Mayweather wanted to fight Golovkin at 154, we would just need to know ahead of time so I can start dropping him a little quicker," Sanchez said. "Right now I'm not even dropping him. It's so easy (making weight). I'm talking (he weighs) 167 lbs before training. That is his walk around weight. We did say that he'd fight anybody from 154 to 168 lbs and in those ranges I don't think that anybody at 154 lbs goes the distance with him." While some may scoff at Sanchez' claims that Golovkin would stop anyone at junior middleweight inside of 12 rounds, the proof is in the pudding that GGG's power is paralyzing and no boxer once the bell rings. With 24 knockouts in 27 fights while campaigning at middleweight, a drop down in weight shouldn't sap the power from his punches. And that spells danger for anyone, including Mayweather and Alvarez. But the reality is that Golovkin is a huge risk for either fighter and it wouldn't be a surprise if both Mayweather and Alvarez steer clear of Golovkin for as long as they can. But eventually, avoidance may not be an option as worthy opponents for Mayweather or Canelo will dwindle and public demand for either to face Golovkin will come to an inaudible roar. They may not face him in the near future (or in Mayweather's case, ever), but Golovkin is willing to wait and continue to bury everyone in his path. "I think after three fights, or two fights, I will go to junior middleweight because of Floyd and Saul Alvarez," Golovkin said. "Those are great fighters. Miguel Cotto is also very good. Why not? I feel great and junior middleweight is no problem for me. Maybe in the next two years I will go to super middleweight."
Floyd won't accept this challenge. .....nor the Hopkins challenge. GGG isnt a big enough name and physically too big...even at 154. Hopkins is a huge sell but Bhop is too big and a stylistic nightmare. ..even at the age of 102.
Why not? I think it's harsh to say ggg just has power, just look at his ability to cut the ring down. I don't see many if any claiming ggg would win but it would definitely have more appeal than floyd fighting a Bradley, Alexander, khan where we could all write the script.due to size difference I wouldn't hold it against floyd if he didn't want to fight him but is the size really that different to Canelo? Also floyd wants to go down as an atg, the names that are in that fame have done this and continuously pushed themselves
I actually think GGG would win. Too big and powerful......underated skills and ultra composed. His style isn't really one that would cause Mayweather problems but his physical dimensions would offer him the luxury to walk through most of Floyd's offense. Tracking him down or corning him would be the biggest puzzle of GGG's life......but 12 rounds is a long time and getting hit by a much bigger and more powerful man would be that wall Floyd would hit coming from 130.
You make interesting points mate. There's no way we can know for sure but isn't that why these fights should happen, to answer the questions and to prove people right or wrong. It's 1 of a couple of fights that could genuinely interest the fans, that's why I can't understand why so many people dismiss it
I think GGG would beat Mayweather, however, I'm not sure at 154. Floyd knows what he is doing by having some fighters come down. Not that it's cheap, the fighters are smart enough to know the effects. But at 160 I think GGG could stop Floyd to be pefectly honest.
I agree. I think Canelo could stop Floyd. But the problem is what's the point having all that power if you can't hit the target. Floyd boxes like he does Saturday GGG is boxing shadows.
I agree......I would love to see it. Floyd has the advantage In skills, talent and experience but I think Floyd isn't about risking too much at this stage of his career. He's on his wsy to that 50-0 mark. He will make sure all his opponents are made to order over the next fee years.
You know, I keep hearing folks say this about Mayweather opponents, yet come fight time, it never actually happens. Go figure. :huh
GGG is no Canelo . Much stronger, much faster, punches way harder, excellent textbook boxer. Hands up high and never gets hit on the chin. He is also a master but in a different style than Floyd. He measures and closes the distance well. Excellent jab. It would be a hell of a match up. Also more experience. It would be a great last fight for Floyd.
I dont think anybody beats GGG at 160, not sure if he could make 154, he should sign a contract but the stipulation regarding weight is he gets penalized financially for every pound over but the fight still happens. Come down to what weight he can but just beats floyd.
Golovkin should expect a catchweight of at least 152, probably lower for starters if this fight is ever going to happen. The other myriad concessions will then follow.
LOL, you got that HALF right. Perhaps in 10 years GGG may become great. Today, he is merely a GOOD prospect and not worthy of even mentioning alongside Mayweather.
