So your logic entails "Heavyweight" Jones, with one bout at Heavyweight against mediocre Ruiz, to beat Jimmy Ellis. Heavyweight veteran who fought and beat the best the division had to offer at the time. Patterson, Quarry, Bonavena, Martin, Chuvalo. :rofl Are you the same guy that said Jones would beat Marciano?
Which of them did he knock out? Maybe some second raters he knocked out that I'm unaware of? But yes, Jones must have been only a third or fourth-rater winning the title from Ruiz, and Ellis had knocked out plenty of tomato cans like that. If you re-read this thread you wouldn't even see me voting one way or the other, you will only see me pointing out a totally unwarranted assumption that Ellis knocks Jones out.
OK, then let's try to agree that a HW Jones would lose a decision against Ellis and let it go at that. Forget the Patterson-Ellis scenerio, Floyd was chiseled and ready to go and Ellis underrated him terribly. I would go so far as to say that Patterson (at 33 then) was damn near as good as he ever was. How many former champs were actually better AFTER losing their title? An old 37 yr. old Floyd was mixing quite well with Ali four years after that. The bottom line, IMO, is Jones is an ATG at middle, but any Jones HW mythical discussions are completly unwarranted IMHO.
Jones never KOd a Heavyweight and had been KOd himself by Light Heavys. So, since Ellis had KOd Heavyweights, even if they were 2nd raters, logically speaking Ellis would stand a chance of KOing Jones. Since Jones had been KOd by Light Heavys.
emanual steward also said jones would have beaten marciano (and dempsey). http://www.secondsout.com/columns/thomas-hauser/jones-ruiz-and-the-roy-jones-legacy1 Athletes today are better and better conditioned than their predecessors. Jones is far superior to heavyweight titleholders like James J. Braddock and Floyd Patterson. And no less an authority than Emanual Steward says that, if you could transport Jones back in a time-capsule, he would beat the smaller heavyweight greats like Jack Dempsey and Rocky Marciano. what would this steward guy know compared to all these experts on the classic boards?
Right, in his dreams. At 15 Rds, or 12 for that matter, apparently you and he believe that past prime Lt. Hvy. Jones could handle prime 188Lb. Dempsey or prime 185Lb. Marciano based on the fact that they were smallish and less well conditioned, and because of Jones's cat like quickness, durability, and superior conditioning. OK :nut
Right. That must explain his beating Tarver in their first bout, and Jones's first bout after beating Ruiz.
And you aren't very smart if you think Heavy Weight Jones beats Ellis or that Ellis isn't capable of a KO win over Jones had they fought at Heavy Weight
again, steward couldn't possibly know as much about the sport as the great joe e. i've always said jones beats marciano as well. we're stuck in jones' decline over the past few years and people have forgotten what a great fighter he used to be. ezzard charles had a terrible end to his career but we all can agree he was one of the greatest fighters ever. over time, the same will happen with jones.
yeah, you must have not watched that fight. it was amazing he won. jones is lucky he didn't face a pressure fighter on that night. he couldn't have held them off.
i thought you were a legit poster, dumb but legit, so i was trying to respond but then i saw your post on the norton thread. you're in the wrong section. the general boxing forum is on another page.
