I'm going with Sugar Ray Robinson, but you can't count out Greb, Gans, Armstrong, or even Archie Moore.

true, ali has said a number of times that robinson was the greatest. lamotta would have reason to say robinson is the greatest because he has a win over him. roy jones and ray leonard have also said in interviews that robinson is the greatest.

If Fitzsimmons record and those of his opponents were complete, then his case for the #1 spot would likely be pretty strong.

Like many fighters of the period, he suffers due to the incomplete nature of the extant records.

Um, this gent you are addressing is the foremost authority on Harry Greb in the world. So nothing that he tells you regarding Greb can be called "uninformed"(let alone "ludicrous" and "asinine").

If Leonard "taught" Tunney how to "beat" Greb, then surely Tunney would have dominated the rest of their fights after the first one, yes? History shows us that he absolutely did NOT.

Stoney, growing up my dad and his cronies would rave about Benny Leonard who as a LIGHTWEIGHT was considered every bit as good as Ray Robinson was as a welterweight...I recall the night that Benny Leonard died refereeing the bouts at St Nick's Arena in 1947, my dad a tough character shed tears for the great "Bennah"...But in choosing Harry Greb as the best P4P fighter I took the fact that Greb, a human dynamo, hyad the
truly unique ability to beat top fighter 10 to 35 pounds heavier than he time and time again...How can you NOT choose a Harry Greb over even Benny Leonard NOR the LATER Ray Robinson ? This question I pose never get's a response from other posters and I am utterly baffled...
Harry Greb, beat a Gene Tunney, a Jack Dillon, a Tommy Gibbons, a Battling levinsky, a Kid Norfolk, a Gunboat Smith, a Tommy loughran, a 195 pound heavier Bill Brennan numerous times, a heavier spoiler Willie Meehan who decisioned a Sam Langford, and others much heavier than he was...Could or
would Ray Robinson great as he was have ever tackled these heavier men in his own time ? The ANSWER is a resounding NO. Robinson a great fighter and master negotiator KNEW his LIMITATIONS... Harry Greb had the skills and CUJONES to challenge and beat anyone he fought...How in
the world can you not place him the best P4P fighter over even a Benny Leonard or Ray Robinson...As a sidenote. I once asked Ruby Goldstein who was a terrific punching LW prospect and referee who saw Harry Greb and of course Ray Robinson "who would have won between Harry Greb and Robinson " ?. Goldstein replied "it would be like a man against a boy "!
I asked "who would be the man "? Ruby replied "Harry Greb"...
We should give the Pittsburgh marvel his due....cheers.

burt does have a point. if greb was a natural welterweight im sure he could have whipped most of the contending lt heavyweights he would tried on for size.

    Good call.
I'd probably include Benny Leonard in the mix.

....... and then, as soon as I mention Benny Leonard, I remember that many had Joe Gans a peg above him.

    That's not logical.
If Tunney knew how to beat Greb it doesn't mean Greb would always lose to him.

If you reduce everything down to, essentially, accomplishment, the usual suspects must be about as they are in the poll. If you reduce everything down to who you think the best man at their best time and weight was, and call me crazy if you like, but I wonder if, say Hagler isn't every bit as likely a candidate as an Ali or Louis. To me, he was one of the single best total packages of a fighter that I have ever seen. Also, if I didn't say something like that, I would end up saying something boring that I've already said dozens of times and that annoys me, so there. Hagler could be the greatest fighter ever and anyone who disagrees with me has gingerballs. Harumph.
