I had it for the swede too...but it was a competitive bout. & jones came on strong in the championship rounds.
Jones has held the title for more than 2 years and I firmly believe that an opponent must TAKE the belt from an established champion. Translation: The challenger must eitgher KO, submit or dominate a majority of the rounds. Gustaffson obviously didn't finish him and the only clear round for him was the third.
I will never understand that line of thinking. But to each their own. All that matters is who won... period. Theres no 'having to do more' for a challenger. As soon as the bell rings, they are both fighting for the title equally. Just imo though :good That being said.... Theres an MMA forum for a reason.
*Mods should move this to the MMA form* That said, 48-47 either way was a fair score. First two were clear for Gustufsson, and the final two were clear for Jones. Third round was close. Rematch, anyone?
yeah but i had to tune in to this figtht cuz Jones kept saying that he could beat a klitschko! If this was boxing the Swede would have TKO'd his ass.
Wow, I actually thought every round was really close except for the 3rd...which I had for Gustafsson. Go figure.
What? No matter what the combat sport in question, that is ridiculous logic. A challenger who just barely edges a slight majority of rounds should absolutely me crowned the new champion. WTH is wrong with people who think otherwise? :-(
had to chime in here before this thread gets moved/deleted. 48-47 Gus for me, and that's pretty much the popular scorecard as i've been looking around the internets any boxing fan who is an MMA hater/casual spectator -- will appreciate this fight, i ****in guarantee it. since there wasn't any big boxing fights today after last week's megabout, i just streamed the UFC instead. didn't know anything about Gus the challenger, but looking at his wiki page and record, being a national amateur boxing champ, i knew he was gonna box jones out of his mind! i would call him "slick" for a white guy and fighting in MMA. GREAT FIGHT!!!
Sorry IB, but there are many people who share my view. I'm not saying it's right or wrong but, allowing challengers to play it safe and outpoint popular champions would be a poor precedent to set. I'm not saying that this is what Gustafsson did, just that challengers should be given every incentive to force the issue and leave no doubts in the minds of the judges or the viewing public.
Apparently Jones was loaded on to a stretcher and rushed to the hospital. Alexander is currently giving interviews, talking with reporters and members of the press.
