Let me preface by saying, I hate Chavez...and Zbik...but, respect where it's due -that was an epic finish. Both laid it all out.

They just aired it on Solo Boxeo Tecate on UniMas in lieu of any live action this week. Next they're showing Chavez Jr. vs. Manfredo Jr. - slightly less competitive. :yep

Vera may have the blueprint for whatever success he might have next week against Chavez in Zbik's performance. Stand up to Julio and bring the fight to him. Don't let him bully you (like Manfredo and so many others forced to submit because they fail to keep a lid on him)

Vera has the chin and gas tank for the job, as few do.

A good underrated fight, lots of action. After that fight, Julio's punch output dropped a lot.

The CompuBox guys are going to suffer bad hand cramps next Saturday, if they didn't that night.

You really think Vera has a Zbik'esque gas tank?:think

He was blowing hard as hell against Dzinziruk, and didn't look full of **** and vinegar against Donatas Bondorovas (****in' Who?)

Do you mean he has a good work rate relative to the power he's putting into his punches or what? :huh

Very brave guy Zbik....similarly brave in his losing effort versus Sturm in his last fight ...if only he had a tiny bit of power...even as much as Geale...any bit of power at all!

    I hate both of them.

But their styles came together for what was a very good fight.

I forget my scorecard, it was either a Draw or Zbik by 2 points.

:yep Alright, granted, 2013 wasn't a banner year in terms of form (although he got the desired results on paper) and not exemplary of Vera's head to head potential or his stamina.

Bondo did give him plenty more hell than he was supposed to - and in fact I had the Lithuanian up a round as of the very fishy, almost flat-out bogus stoppage. (Bondo has a far more legitimate claim to having been screwed against Vera than Mora either time)

As for Dzyna, he was an unwilling victim and Vera put in lots of hard work chasing and breaking him down and ultimately pressuring him into submission...and never quite reached a point where I'd say the fuel gauge was on E. Had Dzyna not quit, I think Vera would have been assailing him just the same in the 11th and 12th as in the first ten. :conf

Anyway, it might not quite be Zbik grade, but Vera's stamina is certainly more than average. (really, it's the only thing Vera has that is - he otherwise personifies mediocrity and in some categories is below average). It allowed him to out-land and thus beat the slick Mora twice on sheer unyielding work-rate despite a pitifully low connect percentage, to keep trading with an equally tired huge-punching James Kirkland even after several rounds of shipping and throwing bombs, to climb off the canvas and eventually get rid of Lee, and to not only last the distance in the rematch and versus McEwan but to keep slashing away down the stretch.

Vera is the kind of guy who easily reaches the point of looking huffy and puffy on account of how much he throws (and often misses, badly ), but his reserves are quite deep. It takes lots of punishment and massive expenditures of energy before he becomes vulnerable to being taken out due to fatigue.

I don't see Chavez one-hitting Vera; he doesn't have that power against someone with Vera's chin. He could take Vera out late after prolonged two-way attrition, since Chavez has oodles more punch resistance...but it wouldn't be until about the championship rounds and if Vera has shied Jr.'s confidence and killer instinct by stepping up to him all night, then maybe Chavez won't press as hard as he would need to do to exploit Vera's self-exhaustion. :good That was kind of my original point. Zbik took a gamble and kept standing in with Chavez blow for blow, really throwing a damper on Chavez's enthusiasm. Granted the gamble didn't pay off as he got robbed, but still. :yep Zbik and Vera aren't great fighters by any stretch of the imagination but they both have the rare combination of attributes to allow someone to make that gamble with JCC Jr. (durability and mental steel in the first place to initially withstand Chavez's shots, and sustained durability even after spending loads of energy).

i had zbik winning that fight as did compubox.

    http://www.***********.com/forums/view.php?pg=chavez-zbik-compubox

zbik outlanding chavez by twice as many punches in 7 of the 12 rounds and overall at a 50 percent higher connect percentage than julio.

i laid -400 in this fight and had a winning ticket as opposed to a losing ticket because of
    Top Rank judging.

Huh, that clip got taken off Youtube since last night. :? There are plenty of uploads of that fight, in full, so I can't imagine someone filed a claim against just one round.

Lame if that's what happened, and if the catalyst was extra attention from here, then...oops.

Is Sr now the head trainer in Jr's corner?

Or was it just a rumor?

That was the original plan, back in July. Last month they decided J.C. Superstar would be in the corner in a more advisory capacity, basically assistant coaching. The head trainer will technically be Vlad Baldenegro.

After the Vera defense, Chavez plants to reunite with Freddie Roach and have Baldenegro and his father assisting going forward.

Vera gets stopped. Chavez moves up in weight and still fights middleweights (as a super middleweight). This will be the first time Vera fights at Super Middleweight.

I dunno IB, I thought Zbik's effectiveness came from his movement in conjunction with his workrate, not just the latter, and such mobility is not exactly something one associates with Vera. Zbik standing in front of Chavez/standing up to him was what allowed Chavez to close the gap on the cards during the middle portion of the fight and was when Zbik was at his least successful IMO.
