First and foremost I'm not picking on Puerto Rican fighters, but after the fight between Garcia and Matthysse, I was reminded of other Puerto Rican fighters who strayed low, as a strategy I believe.

Watching the Garcia fight I was reminded of the fight between Cotto and Judah in which Cotto strayed low several times, which I believe really took the starch out of Judah, accidental or strategy?

Tito Trinidad was notorious for punching at the hip and upper thigh. I can't remember if it was Oba Carr or Del La Hoya who said after the fight they couldn't walk because of the hip and thigh punches he landed.

Low blows can obviously be accidental, and in most cases they are, but I've seen on more than a few occasions where I think it was used as a strategy.

The Garcia vs Matthysse fight reminds me more of Trinidad vs Vargas... except I feel Trinidads low blows played a larger role in effecting the fight then Garcias did. I think the Garcia vs Matthysse fight would look relatively the same with or without those fouls.

Cotto landed one low blow in what could or couldn't have been intentional (its truly debatable)

Trinidad and Garcia landed multiple low blows throughout the fight, and no question some were intentional.

    But point taken :good

    @Kirk

In that Cotto vs Judah fight, there was at least 3 low blows in that fight, and I believe they were part of a strategy that saw Judah as being mentally fragile, and wanted to test that. Not saying Cotto wouldn't have mowed Judah down anyway (as he did), but the low blows certainly had an effect.

Damn, I must have forgotten about the others... my bad. Been awhile since I seen the fight but if there were 3 low blows then good point.

    Garcia's was accidental...Trinidad's , jury is out.
Cotto's ...intentional or not...Judah deserved it!!!

There were two in the earlier rounds and one of those two strayed low mainly because Zab cuffed Cotto behind the neck while he going to the body (like Tony Weeks said Matthysse was doing to Garcia).

I think the notion that Cotto took strategically took the starch out of Zab with low blows is horse****.

    you're full of horseshi.t

    Cotto deliberately fouled Judah repeatedly.

I don't see why you're trying to deny it.

Where are these repeated low blows exactly?

Why morons still saying Tito was loading his gloves. All they ever got on Tito was that IN NEW YORK that way of hand wrapping wasn't allowed. But it was perfectly legal way of wrapping in many other states. They told him, he changed it, end of the story

i think what you're failing to recognize is that all the guys u mentioned are body punchers...and sometimes shots stray below the belt.

arturo gatti used the hip shots in several of his wins...one in particular was wilson rodrigues...go back and watch that one.

another was amir khan against zab judah. zab is a drama queen and looks to get point deductions when he catches stray shots.

bhop is the master at landing shots that test the limits...and when a guy complains...he usually jumps on them at that moment.

it's not a puerto rico thing...it's a boxing thing. best way to combat it...return the favor. after all...it's a fight.

u should do another thread on rabbit punching. matthysse is really good at that.

I remember people here claiming Garcia's left hook was one of the most devastating punches in boxing after the Khan fight

Imagine that punch swung at full force 22 times into your nutsac? :yikes
