Calzaghe's amateur career was much like his professional one in that he avoided challenges then too. Calzaghe's amateur record is good but he never really tested himself beyond the ABA's which at the end of the day are regional, he never achieved anything on the International stage as a am. Carl Froch, with his Bronze at the World championships was a far more distinguished amateur than Calazghe.

joe was a good amateur but all you'll hear on these boards is how politics kept him out of the olympics and how he probably would have won a medal. it gets old after a while.

since this is an appreciation thread, i'll say one nice thing about joe. when he beat hopkins, he became the legit light heavyweight champion and will go down in history for that. joe's undefeated record is a complete joke but he was no doubt a very good fighter.

If Joe was a true legend, there wouldn't be a need for this thread. Where are the Sugar Ray Robinson appreciation threads?

Funny, because I am white and my dad was Welsh and I still don't rate Joe as a legend or all time great.:?

Always the same with Calzaghe - woulda, coulda, shoulda. But his fans still credit him for things he didn't have the confidence (ability) to accomplish. Didn't go to the Olympics, doesn't matter, he would have won gold if he had. Avoided moving up to fight prime Roy Jones, again, doesn't matter, Joe would have won anyway etc, etc.

Calzaghe himself new his limitation but his fans think he had none.

i agree and this is a shame. joe would be much more respected if he had truly stepped up. outside of a prime jones, joe probably could have at least been competitive with other top fighters. at least hatton stepped up and fought the best when they were the best.

    Joe is an ATG.

He's under-appreciated by some because he's not an American and because his skin is the wrong color.

your post appears to be based on the assumption I am American.

    I am not.

shame, now you have try again.

lets be honest, Hatton would be 50-0 undefeated if he'd fought joe's level of opps.
