Seen most of Ty's fights...but this one not on youtube..anyone viewed it and how ? Probably saw it on 'sportsnight' at the time but seems a lifetime ago....Quite how Tyrell lost that is beyond me..jab and move..the fight was made for him against a slow opponent. Tyrell says he had a heavy cold and ran out of gas. Sadly for a fit looking guy he often did ( run out of gas-ideas) Anyway i 'll always be a fan of Tyrell's ...apart from all he is a real genuine bloke thought he showed more courage than any other prime Tyson opponent....anyway any idea how to watch this fight with Mason ? Thanks...
I'm not sure I even saw it at the time myself. Which is strange, because BBC showed Mason's fights. Maybe there's were broadcasting issues ? Biggs was coming off a year lay-off after losing to Damiani, which was itself after a year lay-off from the Tyson defeat.
The fight was on the Beeb, I was there in person, and will never forget that strange noise Biggs made just before Mason finished the fight, when it looked like he was about to blow it.
I remember this fight, looked to me like Biggs laid down...similar to when Ossie Ocasio swallowed against John L Gardner in 1981 at Wembley Arena...now that one really did smell funny!
Agree on both counts! Biggs genuinely got tired then went down from a phantom punch. I remember rewinding the tape because I was recording the show and it was difficult to see if it landed. Biggs had tried though. he just wasn't in shape. But the ocassio vs Gardner fight was SO blatant. It was a wonder it was televised. Occasio looked in shape but he did not want to continue. Talk about play acting. The punch he chose to go down from was a jab. It was embarrassing.
Exactly! I remember to this day the front cover of the following week's Boxing News - Ocasio was staring into the camera with a look that was a mixture of sheepishness & guilt - priceless!!
What strange noise? Remember watching the fight but don't remember any specific details tho - haha what was the noise? You or me intrigued now
I have the fight, I may have to dig it out. If memory servers Mason lands a nothing right hand and Biggs like turns and then decides to just go down and take the count.
Biggs looked to be on his way to victory. Mason scores with a hard looking left and then a right. The punches did not look devastating, but I did not take them. Maybe Biggs just ran out of steam and let himself be counted out. Woller
as you were at ringside..what was the reaction of the people around you to how it finished ? what was the reaction of Biggs and his corner ?
I was not quite ringside, the noise was quite loud, and The Royal Albert Hall is built to pick up noise, from the front! As for the finish, you could see the relieve and joy in Mason's camp, he was seemingly blowing that fight. I did not pick up any hint of suspicion in the result amongst the crowd. Biggs was not exactly in top shape, and I think that he took this fight would suggest he was there for the money, rather than rebuilding his career. [EDIT] Just looked at the weights and Biggs was roughly the same weight as he was against Tyson. But I am sure he looked soft in the fight, and although not blowing like Mason, he did seem to noticeable slow down too, more comfortable with the pace from a tiring Mason.
Thanks for the feedback..and quick too ! shame Tyrell had given up by that point in his career...thing is he always looked fit in the fights i have seen..he lacked power though and his stamina always looked suspect...his best performance for me was against Bowe...boxed him silly but couldnt put him away..then ran out of gas himself. Finally..what do you think the noise was about ? Tyrell didnt seem the type to clown around...why do you think he did it ?
I am sure he was taking the **** out of the clumsy Mason. But someone also said Mason had caught him to the body. As for Biggs career, I remember Lewis getting quite a bit of kudos for taking him out so early. Perhaps like you mention that was because Bowe had one or two problems with Tyrell.
well the Bowe fight was Tyrells last hurrah...after tge Mason defeat he won a few lower profile fights in 1990 then went in with Bowe..he threw everything into that fight if you watch it..its a good contest...then he fought Lewis after Bowe and he went down three times in round three and it was automatically stopped..he clearly didnt want any part of lewis...after that his career fell off the radar...he lost to guys that he shouldve outboxed at range if nothing else...he says he wasnt dedicated enough...his official line is that he has been clean of drugs since 1984 but many sources say otherwise and also say he had or has alchohol problems...a friend of mine met him when he worked as a help in Kirk Johnsons camp several years ago...they are making a documentary due out next year "whatever happened to Tyrell Biggs" should be good..preview on internet...he now works training young kids in Philadelphia right back where he started..very sad he was a good looking fellow but he has aged alot and doesnt sound great.I got an autographed photo from him ..photo was of him throwing a jab at Tyson...he seems very humble and it amazes him people are still interested....incidentally in an early fight versus dangerous puncher J Simm he damaged a collarbone in round two and fought the rest of the fight one handed..and won...its on youtube. He boxed Tyson beautifully for one round..only one round i know..but it was the blueprint for how to beat him. So sad to see he has so little for his career. Thanks again..
