How badly would Calzaghe of got his ass beat if he stepped up and fought Jones in 2002 instead of fighting the likes of Tocker Pudwill?
Rjj. Jones was in his prime in 2002 and Joe was still below his peak. Roy had too much pop in his un-telegraphed punches and would likely sway the judges in his favor. Joe would've been Roy's toughest fight to date at that point because of his tireless work ethic and equal foot speed. I'm a fan of both but like this version of Rjj all day long.
Calzaghe would have won. But it's irrelevant since RJJ blatantly ducked Calzaghe anyway. RJJ was a coward, plain and simple. And a drugs cheat, but people tend to gloss over that for some reason. Likewise, Americans seem to hate Calzaghe. I guess because he's not a black American. If he was, the yanks would be sucking his nuts.
A completely shot to **** Roy managed to drop Calzaghe. Prime Roy would have finished the job, but 'slappy was smart enough to wait until Roy was clearly well past it before coming over to fight him. Even then, Joe's son was scared for him but Joe told him that he needn't worry because he wasn't fighting the same Roy Jones that he had seen highlights of. :deal
there's no such thing as a fighter who has made his name in the US who doesn't get his career defining fights now you know why joe didn't get them, why only people who are his countrymen and grew up watching him think he is an ATG, and why calzaghe has so many detractors if you cant educate yourself to understand how big fights are made through US networks, then you'll always believe that fighters who fight away from the international spotlight are 'avoided'
not sure Joe would get stopped his strengths were his good chin and great stamina see, but he has nowhere near the ability to outbox prime fit roy with his reflexes. In wales, the welsh ref might carry him back his corner too, so he woud probs survive. He can however beat a disease ridden roy of 39 or 40something, like most semi decent fighters can do although other fighters don't showboat in front of the cripple who would have destroyed them in his prime - Joe is the kind of guy who does showboat in front of cripples. and Roy would get no credit for beating a guy who had faced nobody really good except a draw with robin reid. Joe would reitre I expect..oh who am I kidding, Joe would never task the fight anyway.
its always woudda but he didn't do it or even face off against a prime top, not once in 46-0 apart from Kessler. in 46 fights, that appalling for any world champion. wow a guy who fights a striong of nobodies as defences for 10 years is the one who isn't ducking? Chris John, anyone?
He would have been ripped to pieces and sent back to the clubs of Wales. RJJ would have gotten zero credit for the victory considering Calzaghe was unknown his entire career.
What a truly ridiculous post. It's one thing to say Calzaghe would have won......it's an opinion. But the other stuff is nonsense. Back then, Calzaghe rendered himself irrelevant on the world level by easing off on his competition.
Not sure Calzaghe would have got his 'ass beat' as Jones had issues with Southpaw's his whole career and he had no Plan B in a fight. None. Jones wasn't exactly fighting elite fighters at the time either.
Lets see what Calzaghe himself had to say on the matter: "I'm not chasing after Roy Jones. Be honest, Roy Jones is a good fighter and I don't want tough fights, I just want big money." Joe himself knew that prime Jones would batter him, he had no interest in making that fight happen.
