He wanted the crown jewels in 2003, but gave him 50/50 in 2008, AFTER he'd dismissed him as a threat.



Back on topic.

IF Joe had've fought him in 2002, I think Roy would have won without too much difficulty.


But a 25/26 year old version of Roy, would have beaten him EASILY!

They'll probably say that a shot Calzaghe already beat a prime Jones

 

Roy wasn't fighting elite fighters at the time, but he'd already beaten them. Joe had never beaten an elite fighter at that point.


Did Roy have issues with southpaws?

Yes and no.


Del Valle clipped him, but Roy didn't have too much difficulty apart from that.


He beat Reggie Johnson with ease, and Reggie went on to give Tarver a good fight, three years later.


He easily beat Otis Grant, who was a decent fighter, but who'd moved up.


Without being disrespectful, we'll exclude Frazier.


He beat Hall with ease.


He had a hard time with Eric Harding, who frustrated him, with his height and reach, but Harding and Calzaghe weren't alike in how they fought, and Roy wasn't really motivated to fight Harding, but had to, because Harding had beaten Tarver in the eliminator.


Tarver obviously caused him problems in the first fight, and knocked him out in the rematch, but Roy was 35 at that point, and had been up to HW and back.

I don't think Roy would have had an issue with Tarver 99-2002.


Joe was a great fighter, but he was always relatively easy to hit, especially with right hands.

So I don't think he'd have caused Roy the same problems as Tarver or Harding.

Also, Tarver was unbelievably fired up to fight Roy, and as we can see from Joe's own comments, I don't think he would have been. He certainly wouldn't have had the determination and the belief that Tarver had.


After the Clinton Woods fight, Richie Woodhall said "I think Joe could give him a really good competitive fight at 168. But not up at 175, where Roy is stronger."

He posts up the Hall fight from 2000, and then he posts the fight with Joe from 2008, and then he asks people to tell the difference between the two versions of Roy.

Calzaghe's style was tailor made for a prime Jones. He'd really get tore up.

 

2002 is when Roid Jones was getting the good stuff...

 

A prime Jones destroys any version of Slappy

 

"ducker" vs "cheater" then? like somebody else said, roy on the good stuff was very hard to beat

 

How do we know this? 'Prime' Jones didn't fight any of the legitimate threats that were out there at the time.

He chose the path of least resistance.

 

You've got to be completely insane to think Calzaghe could even compete with a prime Jones. Calzaghe would get completely embarrassed. I found it shameful when Joe was trying to make fun of Roy's flashiness in the ring when they did fight, even though Jones was so washed up beyond recognition. Its like kicking an old man when he's down, but I guess Joe couldn't stop him so he resorted to acting like an ass. A prime Jones would have had zero respect for Joe, would have went at him and put a real beating on him probably stopping in him by 8th round.
