British sparring stories

OK - I know a few people will say "it's only sparring, doesn't mean anything etc" but a lot of people - me included - do like to hear a good sparring rumour/story.

Whether it be recent or from years back - anyone got any they'd like to share involving British fighters?

 

Here's a few recent one's

- Quigg and Rigo.

Quoted from Quigg after his trip to Roach's wildcard gym.

"I was sparring with fighters out there who you don't even know but then someone says, 'Oh, he's 15-0'," Scott explains nonchalantly. "I sparred with [world champion Cuban] Guillermo Rigondeaux, Alejandro Perez, who's alway's in good fights, and you're just put in with everyone. Once, I was warming up to spar with this Russian kid, they called him 'The Crazy Russian', when Rigondeaux knocked his sparring partner out. So Freddie turned round and was like, 'Oh, we need someone to finish these rounds; we've got four left'. They rolled the guy out and they were like, 'Do you want to come in and finish the rounds?' I can honestly say now that I was in no way shape or form out of my depth. Don't get me wrong, I know sparring is different to fighting. I'm under no illusions about that, but he couldn't hit me. My defence is one of my best attributes. That's what separates me from everyone else."

- Anthony Small sticking it on Degale... causing a big bust up, Mcdonnell going off his nut.

- Pat Barret dropping a young Ricky Hatton... with a bodyshot.

- Froch dropping Groves.. when I first heard about this when it happened circa 09/10 I heard it was a bodyshot, now in light of this fight being announced it was on the button?

- Like it's been mentioned, I've heard a few stories of Groves dishing it out and being on the receiving end of it in sparring. There's the stories in the lead up to the Degale fight he was put over by Ryan Aston, also Froch's previously said Callum Johnson dropped Groves with a left hook. More recently we've heard of Groves getting the better of Kessler.

- On the subject of body shots, Leon Williams apparently dropping Chisora with one.

- Few different ones on Macklin. Apparently he was deemed not good enough by Roach after training at the wildcard... since done well for himself on the world scene though if that's true. Hatton has previously said Macklin is a bit of a beast in sparring, also heard Macklin used to put it on Paul Smith.

- Ken Buchanen was still sparring even with pro's up until a few years ago.

 

Remember that, wasn't that around the time Naz and Eubank supposedly had the bust-up at the airport?

I remember Eubank saying that he went in with Graham, decked him in the first round... then couldn't lay a glove on him for the rest of the session

 

He never did spar Gamboa... he flew over to Mayweathers gym but Gamboa had left a day or 2 before.
