The rematch was one of the greatest fights of all time. Get outta here.

About as significant as Wlad-Haye, and a little more than Wlad-Ibragimov, but still in the same ballpark as the latter.

Povetkin and Haye are pretty similar levels of challenger. Haye was more of a threat stylistically because of his fast hands and power, and he had a decent pedigree: cruiserweight champion, heavyweight beltholder, and a few good heavyweight victories. Povetkin has amateur accomplishments, a somewhat better list of heavyweight scalps than Haye, and is also a beltholder.

Ibragimov wasn't quite on the same level as the other two, but he had similar stylistic advantages to Haye (fast hands, power), several respectable victories, and a belt.

Of the three, I'd rate Povetkin as a close #1. Byrd II would have been up there as well, but Wlad held all the stylistic cards there.

Historically? The Eastern European venue is a sign that boxing has increasingly globalized.

I don't understand people who think that. What good was Haye's power, hand and foot speed when he can only fight off the back foot as a counter puncher, has no idea how to pressure or work his way inside and no idea how to fight on the inside. Haye's attributes against a SHW like Lewis or Klychko are useless.

Random fact: Povetkin has beaten every boxer he's fought in his life, he avenged all his amateur losses
Won't make a difference for this fight tho

Historical significance is really hard to tell, although it probably won't be much.

If Povetkin was younger and had a chance to go on to dominate after Wlad destroys him, then it would count for a lot. But most likely, he'll be like any other Klitschko opponent, just another second rater beaten by the champ.

Two top heavyweights from former Soviet Union fighting for the heavyweight crown in Moscow. The historical significance of this is pretty much in your face.

I wasn't around then either but its easy to look up. LaStarza vs Marciano had Wlad/Haye grudge match type hype as LaStarza had been trash talking for years and claiming Rocky was dodging him after their controversial intial meeting as upstarts years previoiusly.

LaStarza was a colorful character and got into acting after boxing, he had a reputation as one of the slicker and better defensive young fighters of the 50s. In their long awaited rematch, Marciano eventually wore him down, broke the bones in his arms, and knocked him through the ropes, the first stoppage loss of his 53 fight career.

+1. Those who say there's no historical significance are taking that approach because they don't want this to be significant despite it staring them in the face. A lot of people want to call it worthless because it's the pinnacle of a paradigm shift they didn't want to see happen. So, the best thing for them to do is write it off as garbage and downplay the participants.

These aren't just two top former Soviet Heavyweights fighting for a fluke ABC strap, this is one of the longest reigning champs in history (who has the capacity to treat the U.S. market as an afterthought, which is unheard of for Heavyweight champions) fighting a top unbeaten contender, both with Super Heavyweight gold to prove their amateur chops as well. Rather than appreciate that, there's still a lot of bitter people who don't want it to count because it's not one of their guys fighting for it- it's a classic case of "I'm not winning, this game sucks".

Totally insignificant even for the hardcore boxing fan.

I conssider my self a mid to hardcore boxing fan and I didnt even know this fight was happening.

Outside of Germany absolutely no one cares about this.

    Another absolutely meaningless heavyweight fight.

    good luck with that
how would you compare the significance of this fight to the significance of Arthur Abraham and felix sturm in the middleweight division?

Edit : my mistake, thought you were saying Germany doesn't care about this fight

It is big and highly recognised fight in Europe.

But I know, I know you were just trolling.
