Wlad-Povetkin: Here's why there was so much holding

1. Yes there was a lot of holding during Wlad-Povetkin
2. Yes, POVETKIN initiated a lot of it

The style of Povetkin is what caused a lot of the holding. Povetkin
was just getting lower and rushing in, which was the initiation for many
of the clinches.

This picture here shows what I'm referring to. See how Povetkin is leading with his head, just rushing in...that is what caused so many of the clinches.

I do give Povetkin credit though, he came to fight, he was tough, never gave up. Povetkin fought up a few levels last night, no doubt due to the magnitude of the fight, it being in his home country, etc...

Even though Povetkin was the cause of a lot of the clinching, imo, I don't really blame him for it. It's just a matter of styles. When you have a guy that rushes in low, against a guy who likes to stand up and fight tall, well, these clinches are naturally going to happen...it's just a matter of the two styles together.

 

Sorry but what exactly should this picture prove?

 

I tend to agree. Povetkin kept rushing in close even when it was clear it wasn't working. I'd have loved to see him try to box a bit and put those gold medal credentials to good use.

 

If Povetkin just rushed in with his head, why didn't Wlad just knock him out ?
It's because ...

Wlad LOVES to LEAN on fighters' backs. Lennox Lewis did the same thing.
Povetkin gave Wlad the opportunity, and Wlad grabbed it - quite literally.

 

just because someone tries to get low and inside doesn't mean wlad has to clinch.
povetkin was very rarely initiating clinches, only a few times when he was hurt.
Clinching is against the rules, the frequency that wlad was doing it should not have gone unpunished.

 

This is what I said last night while watching the fight. Povetkin was coming in very low and giving Wlad the excuse to clinch/lean.

 

The reason is wasn't working was because wlad grabbed hold of him everytime. What else can the smaller fighter do when you are giving away 5 inches in height, you have to try to get in close.

 

Wlad is a terrible boxer, he's just a bigger more athletic version of John Ruiz. I've read that Wlad held 180 times in this "fight", that is not boxing and is illegal within the rules.

I agree. Here Povetkin should've realized that it doesn't work just to just rush in. Wlad is to experienced.....why didn't he try the box more instead of rushing in always?

 

He's not a terrible boxer, far from it. Povetkin is an exceptional boxer but wlad ruined the fight with illegal tactics.

 

Because he knew he couldn't. We saw the few times Povetkin stood on the outside, and it ended up with his face being peppered, 2, 3 times in a row with the jab.

 

What excatly stopped Wlad from using his mitts? People want to watch boxing , not holding.

You dont strike me as somebody who appreciates the art of boxing.

Go watch Ray Leonard vs Tommy Hearns 1. 14 rounds and not a single clinch. Just box , nothing but boxing.

Nope, sure didn't. I can only guess that Povetkin felt that style was his only chance.

 

Probably so, but think that this caused the fight beeing boring, on the other hand this wasn't Povetkin KOed....
