Should there be a zero tolerance policy against clinching in boxing?

Clinching and wrestling is against the rules right?

So do you think that if a boxer holds at any point in a fight he should be warned?

It's almost become an integral part of the sport now. You saw Ali employ it very well against Joe Frazier.

But after Wlad's performance i thought that this question should be discussed.

    Post your thoughts please.

When you´re in a critical moment as a fighter, i see no problem there with surviving that moment through clinching.

Now with the knowledge of Wlad´s weak chin, you can argue he had 180 critical moments in his fight with Povetkin.

Zero policy is absurd, because you'll get so many DQ's that way the sport would become unwatchable.

But of course excessive holding (and other fouling methods) should be punished much faster. Problem is that according to the rules you should get warned/punished for it, but the referees suck and/or are partial.

Like mentioned, a guy like Ali could get away with murder in some of his fights. And today some still can (Ward/Wlad/B-Hop etc.)
But there has to be done something, but it's going on for longer as I'm alive so it probably always stays this way.

It's simplistic to say that all clinching/wrestling is against the rules. If you are preventing a guy from throwing who really wants to, then it's against the rules, but if both guys just rest against each other in the clinch then there is Little the ref can do.

Hitting and holding should not be allowed. It should be treated as low blows.

Illegal Clinching isn't a major problem anywhere in boxing apart from a Wladimir Klitschko fight.

He is abusing it the point where its foul/hold first , box last.

Idiots can drag other guys names through the dirt to defend Clinchko but the reality is they never came close to amount of illegal fouling Wlad is abusing in the ring.

I hate clinching it is not boxing or fighting it is what people like ali do because they are not good enough to win the fight. and don't you think it is a bit gay to rub up against another man, maybe that's why wlad did it because he could of won the fight anyway

If you allow some clinching it leaves the door open for fiascos like Wlad v Povetkin.

Besides, i want to see boxers throwing punches.

    Two things to say :

    1. Tying up an opponent's arms when the two fighters are so close they are touching should be tolerated to some extent, but should be punished only if done excessively . Fighters should be told to "punch and get out". But not all fighters are good in-fighters so inevitably arms will get tangled and clinching will occur.
In the case of a hurt fighter or overmatched, it's to be expected. If done excessively it should be punished.

    2. Blatant grabbing, or pulling a fighter in, reaching out and grabbing, holding-and-hitting, holding the back of his head, throwing, general wrestling tactics ..... these things need to be dealt with more severely.

For some reason, some referees seem to tolerate the more serious violations without any warning.

Did you watch Alexander v Maidana. That was a disgraceful clinch fest by Alexander. It happens quite often.

There are times where i feel like clinching should be allowed. If a boxer gets caught with a big shot they should clinch to get there legs back. clinching just to avoid fighting on the inside should be penalized. So i guess there is a gray area on when should a clinch be allowed or as long as a boxer isnt abusing it they can do it in moderation?
